WASHINGTON, D. C.

 

LOCATION

Washington, D.C. - the capital of the United States is situated on the banks of the Potomac River. It’s a city and district - the District of Columbia. This district is a small piece of land that does not belong to any state. Don’t confuse it with the state of Washington, which is located in the northwest of the USA. Washington D.C. is located on the East Coast. George Washington as the permanent site for nation’s capital chose it on December 1, 1800. t owes its name to Columbus, the discoverer of America.

So what makes Washington so important? It is so-called "only industry"— the U.S. government. Washington is the place where the key political buildings in America are situated.

 

PRESIDENTS

George Washington was the firs person to be elected the President of the United States. It was born in Virginia. George Washington led the American Army in many battles during the war for American Independents.

Thomas Jefferson was the third President of the United States. The Declaration of Independents was written by him.

Abraham Lincoln became the sixteenth President of the United States. Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the blacks in the south from slavery.

 

PLACES OF INTERESTS

The White House -this is the oldest public building in Washington D.C. The White House is the official residence of all presidents of the United States. The beautiful home of every President of the USA, except the first President, George Washington, because at the time of his presidency the white house was not built yet. It’s where the Presidents live and work. The President and his family live on the second floor. The public can visit the White House and see several of the famous rooms. It has 132 rooms. It has the most famous address in the United States - 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

United States Capitol –the tallest building in Washington D.C. This is the most famous building in the USA. The Capitol is the place here laws are made. There will never be any skyscrapers built in this city, because the Capitol should always remain the tallest building there. The Capitol is surrounded by a beautiful garden with many trees and flowers.

The Library of Congress –is the largest national library in the world. The library of Congress contains more than 13 million books in various languages, more than 19 millions manuscripts including the personal papers. The law of 1870 makes it obligatory to send to the library two copies of every American book, newspaper or any other published items.

Washington Monument- This monument was built in honor of George Washington. It is 555 feet tall and provides a panoramic view of Washington, D.C.

Jefferson Memorial this memorial was built in honor of Thomas Jefferson. Inside is a 19-foot statue of Thomas Jefferson standing on a 6 – foot pedestal. The writings of Thomas Jefferson are inscribed on the walls. They are about freedom of the mind, freedom of the body, necessity of education and necessity of chance in laws.

Lincoln Memorial was built in honor of 16th president of the USA. Inside the memorial is a huge statue of the former president. It has 36 columns surrounding the walls, representing 36 States in the union at the time of Lincoln’s death.
