Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is an ancient city in Peru, high in the Andes mountains. It was built by the Inca people in the 15th century and later left empty. The Spanish never found it, so it stayed hidden for hundreds of years. In 1911 an American explorer, Hiram Bingham, discovered it and told the world about this mysterious place.

The city has stone houses, temples, and terraces for growing plants. It is often called the "Lost City of the

Incas." Today Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Thousands of tourists climb the mountains every year to see it. Because the place is very popular, Peru has special rules to protect it from too many visitors.

The Polar Bear

The polar bear is the largest land carnivore in the world. Adult males can weigh more than 600 kilograms and are more than two metres long. Polar bears live in the Arctic, where it is very cold. They have thick white fur and a layer of fat under their skin that keeps them warm. Their white colour also helps them to hide when they hunt.

Polar bears are excellent swimmers and can swim many kilometres without stopping. They hunt mainly seals, which they catch on the ice. Today polar bears are in danger because global warming is melting the ice, and the animals have less space to live and hunt. Scientists and organisations are working to protect polar bears, but it is not easy. These animals are a symbol of the Arctic and of nature that needs protection.

The Pyramids of Egypt

The Pyramids of Egypt are some of the most famous monuments in the world. They were built thousands of years ago as tombs for the pharaohs, the kings of Ancient Egypt. The largest pyramid, the Great Pyramid of Giza, was built for Pharaoh Khufu. It is more than 4,500 years old and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The pyramids were built with huge stone blocks, and nobody knows exactly how people managed to move them. Many scientists believe that thousands of workers used special ramps and tools. Today the pyramids are one of the most popular tourist places in Egypt. Millions of visitors come every year to see the ancient buildings, the Sphinx, and the desert around them. The pyramids remind us of the power and knowledge of Ancient Egypt.

The Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest in the world. It is in South America and covers parts of nine countries, including Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. The Amazon is sometimes called "the lungs of the Earth" because it produces about 20 percent of the world's oxygen.
