The Olympic Games

Every four years the finest athletes in the world gather to compete against each other and to determine who best exemplifies the Olympic motto—Citius,Altius,Fortius—meaning “faster, higher, stronger.” This gathering, known as the Olympic Games, is the most celebrated sporting festival in the world. The games attract athletes from over 200 nations and strive to promote international understanding and human development through sport.

The ancient Greek games ended in AD 393. The Games, like all Greek games were an integral part of a religious festival. They were held in the honor of Zeus, the Greek god, in Olympia, southern Greece.  The modern games have been held every four years since 1896 with the exceptions of 1916, 1940, and 1944, which were canceled because of World Wars I and II. Women first began competing in the Olympics in 1900.

The Olympic Games are classified into the Summer Olympics and the Winter Olympics. Summer Olympics include a large number of sports. Archery, football, athletics (track and field), badminton, basketball, boxing, cycling, diving, field hockey, gymnastics, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, volleyball, water polo, weight lifting, wrestling, and yachting are some of them. Men do not participate in softball and women do not participate in baseball, boxing, and wrestling.                                                                                                                                           First, second, and third place awards are given for each event. The awards are gold, silver, and bronze medals respectively. The fourth to eighth places are awarded diplomas. All competitors and officials also receive a medal as a souvenir.
The Olympic flag presented by Coubertin in 1914. The flag has five interlinked rings—blue, yellow, black, green, and red—on a white background. These rings represent the “five parts of the world” joined together in the Olympic movement. Blue represents Europe. Black represents Africa. Red represents America. Yellow represents Asia. Green represents Oceania. The five colors and white were chosen because they contained the flag colors of all nations in existence at the time the flag was created. All the participants and officials stay in a single place, called the Olympic Village. This concept was introduced in Los Angeles in 1932. The village is located as close as possible to the main stadium. The village is located as close as possible to the main stadium and other facilities and has separate accommodations for men and women. Only competitors and officials may live in the village, and the number of team officials is limited.
