T e a c h e r : Dear friends! Today we are going to have a very interesting lesson
exploration of ancient British monuments and legends and traditions connected with them. To
do this we'll have a tour around Britain with the help of our map and sites on it, we want to talk
about. During our exploration we are going to fill in a special form prepared for our lesson to
see what new things we managed to learn about mysterious Ancient Britain.
II.
T e a c h e r : Let's repeat the words associations to sec what Ancient Britain is for us:
Фонетическая и речевая зарядка.
P1: It's Stonehenge 13 Km from Solisbury (демонстрация и запись в таблице). We
know from our textbook that it's one of the European biggest stone circles 10 or 12 metres
high of prehistorical time 18501400 ВС. The Druids used Stonehenge for a calendar to know
when the months and seasons started. On the 24lh of June the Sun shines on the Heel Stone. It's
the longest day of the year. On that day we can see Druids festival. It's a tradition. But
according to another source (the newspaper) we found out that many parts of Stonehenge were
built before the time of Druids and Pyramids in Egypt and that it could be used as an
observatory for complex calculations and predictions of movements of sky bodies. So, it's a
kind of computer!
P2: Our branch is science and the second place connected with it is Oxford
(демонстрация). University which appeared in 11641169. It consists of 35 different colleges
and 5 "halls". The scholars had to find this place to study when Henry II made English clerks
to go to the University of Paris. They taught theology, law, mathematics, natural philosophy
and rhetoric. Oxford is a beautiful ancient city of 912 AD. That's why one square mile of it has
more than 900 buildings of architectural and historic interest.
P.3 Our next branch is about legendary heroes. The legends of King Arthur began to
appear in the XII century and are based on a Celtic leader of the 6lh century (515) who
defended his country against Saxon invasion. He was born in Tintagel (Cornwall) and brought
up by Merlin, an old Celtic magician. Arthur became King of Britain at the age of 15 when he
managed to pull a sword from a rock. He received a magic Sward Excalibur from the Lady of
the Lake. His Knights sat at the round table so, that they were equal. The Knights had feasts,
sang ballads and had to kill dragons and giants. They respected honour. The legend said King
Arthur died in a Tintagel Monastery which is King /Trthur's castle now.
55 P4: One more legend is about Lady Godiva, a kind and beautiful woman and a wife of Lord
Leofric, the ruler of Coventry in 1040. The people of Coventry paid much money to their Lord
and Lady Godiva often asked her husband not to take so much money, but he only laughted at
her. He agreed only once, but by his words she must ride naked on horseback through the
streets of the town. There are 2 versions of this legend: while doing it she was covered by her
long hair and according to the second all people in Coventry shut doors, windows, nobody
came out, except Tom, who became blind when he looked out.
P5: Robin Hood is a legendary hero who lived in Sherwood Forest in Nottingham, situated in
the heart of England, surrounded by countryside. Stories about his adventures appeared in the
14'1' century, but it is believed that Robin was born in 1160 at time of many robbers living in
the woods. Robin Hood and his Merry Men robbed the rich to give to the poor. Robin was a
great sportsman, a brave fighter. He dressed in green, lived in the forest with his wife Maid
Marion and his men. Al though the great Sherwood Forest has practically disappeared, there
are parts of it with the Majot Oak the headquarters of Robin Hood. A stature of Robin Hood
now stands on Robin Hood's Green at the foot of Nottingham Castle, founded in 1068.
P6: Our next branch is English monarchy and the first sight connected with it is
Westminster Abbey in London, which was founded in 1050 as a monastery. Later it was rebuilt
by Henry III. In the 18lh century the West Towers were added. It is a place of coronation of all
English Kings. This tradition was established by William the Conqueror, who was crowned in
1066. The present Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in 1953. It is a place where English Kings
are married and buried. Many famous Englishmen were buried here: Newton, Darvin, Watt.
P7: One more sight connected with monarchy is the Tower of London the oldest palace,
fortress and prison in Europe. It was built around 1090 by William the Conqueror on a site of a
Roman fort. Massive walls and other towers were added later. It has been a citadel, palace,
prison, the home of the Mint, the treasury, the first royal observatory. Three queens of England
have been beheaded within its walls. The Tower's guardians Befeaters wear scarlet and gold
uniforms dating back to Henry VII's time. Ravens lived in the Tower according to the legend
made noise while attacking of enemies at night, when the guardians were sleeping.
Pg: Windsor castle, founded in 1086, has been the residence of the Kings and Queen of
England for over 800 years and it is still a residence of Elizabeth II. In 1348 the Order of the
Garter was established in the Castle when 26 Knights were elected members. They included
Edward III and The Black Prince. Another residence of English monarchs is Buckingham
palace, built in 1703. The first monarch who took residence was Queen Victoria. The Palace is
not opened for the public. The ceremony of the Changing the Guards at Buckingham Palace is
a great tourists attraction. It takes place daily at 1130. One group of guards in their traditional
uniforms gives keys to another group.
T e a c h e r : I want to add about Buckingham Palace. It is a family house where children
play and grow and the place where presidents, Kings, politicians go to meet the Queen. Being
Queen is a really busy job: reading letters from the public (1000 each week), having daily
meetings with her Private Secretary, ambassadors, judges, bishops, getting thousands of
invitations, opening new hospitals, bridges, factories. In her spare time Elizabeth II enjoys
horse racing, fishing, walking, taking photos on her travels. She visited 128 countries during
her official visits in 50 years.
IV. Заключительная часть урока. Подведение итогов.
T e a c h e r : We are finishing now. Let's listen to the dialogue to finish our lesson.
P10: I've been to Britain to look at the Queen.
P9: Russian tourist, Russian tourist, Where have you been?
P9: Russian tourist, Russian tourist, What did you do there?
Pio: I saw ancient monuments to study, to compare.
P9: Russian tourist, Russian tourist, ,Why will you go there?
Pi0: Among traditions, legends my time well to spare.
