George Walker Bush
I. Read the text.
George Walker Bush served as the 43rd President of the United States, from 2001
to 2009. He was born on July 6, 1946, in Connecticut, to George H.W. Bush – later the
41st President of the United States. He received a bachelor’s degree in history from Yale
in 1968 and then served as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. He got a Master of
Business Administration from Harvard Business School in 1975. He earned a reputation
for his personal responsibility and wisdom.
Following graduation, Bush began a career in the energy business. Bush won the
Presidency in 2000. He worked to extend freedom, opportunity, and security at home and
abroad. His first initiative as President was the No Child Left Behind Act, a measure that
attempted to raise standards in schools. He also cut taxes for every taxpayer and
implemented free trade agreements with more than a dozen nations.
President Bush has also worked to improve healthcare; increase military strength.
Because President Bush believes the strength of America lies in the hearts and souls of
our citizens, he has supported programs that encourage individuals to help their neighbors
in need.
The most significant event of Bush’s term came on September 11, 2001, when
terrorists killed nearly 3,000 people in the 9/11 attacks. He declared a War on Terror and
invaded Afghanistan to end the Taliban regime and find Osama bin Laden. He later
invaded Iraq over weapons of mass destruction that did not exist. Bush returned to his
Texas ranch after leaving office and is now a public speaker.
