Let me offer to your attention a research work on a theme Body Language.
People have been interested in this issue many years, lots of books and articles,
psychological researches were made. Nevertheless this issue is still relevant. This
theme also has a practical value as for professional head hunters and position
applicants, as for usual people too.
Slide 2
The purpose of the research work is success in educational and professional
activity. This purpose is achieved through the following targets:
1. to obtain information about body language,
2. to learn to identify the moments when a person is telling a lie,
3. to identify the differences of nonverbal communication means in different
countries.
Slide 3
In accordance with the targets set, the following issues were considered:
Body language.
Signs of a Liar: Body Language and Lies
Body Language Across Different Cultures
Slide 4
In the first part of the work Body language I explain the meaning and
the application significance of the term Body Language.
Body language is nonverbal form of communication: it consists of our facial
expressions, gestures and body movements, which we use in order to send out
information about how we feel. When we listen to someone, we always try to
understand what they really mean by watching their face or gestures.
Slide 5 According to experts, body language accounts for 55% of the effect we have when
communicating. Tone of voice accounts for 38% and words just 7% so what you
say matters much less then how you behave.
Our body can tell a lot by the position of hands and arms, feet, by face
expressions (eyes, lips, head nodding an so on).
Slide 6
Facial expressions are a very common way that we use to communicate every day.
Slide 7
Pay attention to the way a person smiles. If there are no wrinkles around the eyes,
then the smile is false.
Slide 8
Sadness. The upper eyelids are slightly lowered. The stare is at a loss. The corners
of lips are down.
Slide 9
Anger. Bare in mind that if the eyebrows are not lowered and kept close – the anger
is false. A person wants only to scare you. If a person shouts and his eyebrows are
up – it is an attempt to convince you.
Slide 10
Contempt. Lower eyelids and one corner of the mouth are lifted – facial expression
is true.
Slide 11
Disgust.
Slide 12
Fear.
Slide 13
Surprise. Be sure if surprise lasts more than 5 seconds, then it's false.
Slide 14 Gestures are not less important than mimic signs. Any discrepancy between words
and gestures can speak of insincerity.
The good, or bad, thing is that we cannot hide our feelings. We may say one thing,
but our body language won’t hide what we really mean. The work includes the
overview of the most common verbal and body language signs that lie. A liar
betrays him/herself in any of a number of ways with verbal and body language. By
watching for certain body language and by listening for specific spoken signs we
can understand that someone tries to deceive us. So the second part of the
work Signs of a Liar: Body Language and Lies – contains the information how we
can recognize the signs of a liar.
Slide 15
Gestures of sincerity – open palms, a confident look.
Slide 16
Gestures of superiority. If a man shows thumbs, he believes in himself. The head
little tilted back is a sign of superiority too.
Slide 17
Gestures of uncertainty.
Slide 18
Gestures of protection. Any attempt to close the body is a defense posture.
Slide 19
Critical assessment and the gestures of thought.
Slide 20
Reading the body language of the feet is one of the best doorways into another's
thoughts and emotions because many of us are far less conscious of our feet as
compared to our arms and hands.
Uncertainty.
Slide 21
Arrogance. Disinterest. Slide 22.
The third part of the work Body Language Across Different Cultures – is about
the differences in the meaning of gestures in different countries.
Gestures are part of the body language and they are important in learning a
language. And we should be very careful when using the same gestures in a foreign
country. In the work I speak about the meaning hand shaking and its frequency.
Slide 23.
Head nodding. So in most of the world it means “yes”. But in Bulgaria it means
“No”. In Japan “Yes, I understand”, or, “Yes, please continue”, but not
necessarily, “Yes, I agree”. In parts of India: head is moved (tilted) sidetoside to
show agreement.
Slide 24.
The O – ring. In the UK or the USA it means “Ok”, in France, Belgium zero, in
Japan money, in Turkey it is considered rude.
Slide 25.
Thumbs up.
The meaning of this sign in different countries are: in Egypt, Israel - “Very
good”, “Perfect”, in Australia “Terrific”, in China - “You are number 1” ,
in the UK - “Ok”, “All right mate”, “See you later mate”, “Brilliant”
and in Brazil “Thanks”.
Slide 26.
The Vsign in most of the world means Two, Victory, Peace.
Slide 27. In conclusion I express the idea that by reading nonverbal information we can get
a unique opportunity to succeed in the business sphere and the sphere of personal
relationships, producing the necessary impression on the opponent.
So We don’t have bodies. We are our bodies.
