about music. As you see, the topic of our lesson is Music; the music we love, enjoy listening
to, admire. We are surrounded by the sounds of music during our life. Music is much more
than a series of notes and rhythm. Music is a universal language. It can reach deep into
human spirit. Music can change a mood in an instant. It can inspire creativity. Music can
reduce stress and carry many health benefits.

Study the following text:
Can you think of a day
without music? There is
music everywhere: at home, in a
concert hall, in parks, at the
seaside and even in the forest.
People cannot live without
music. They listen to music, they
dance to music and learn to play
musical instruments. But what is
music? Specialists explain it very
well. Music isn’t a combination
of pleasant sounds only. It is an
art which reflects life. Music
reflects people’s ideas and
emotions. Music is also a
weapon. It fights for light against
darkness, for freedom against
tyranny, for humanism against
barbarity. When speaking of
different forms of music we have
to mention first and foremost
classical music. We can admire
different musical genres:
symphony, concerto, chamber
music, vocal music, opera and
ballet. Classical music gives us
delight and pleasure, partly
sensual, partly intellectual. It is
always a complex of emotions:
we feel excitement and at the
same time, love for others and a
desire to do something for them.
When listening to classical music
our feelings are combined into
one and to give it a name it will
be happiness. Classical music
contains a powerful appeal to
listeners. It addresses both our
senses and intellect. We are
lucky to have such a famous
orchestra in St. Petersburg which
executes music by Beethoven
and Mozart, Britten and
Gershwin. It is famous all over
the world for its original
interpretations of classical music.
Many people admire musical
pieces which are based on
the theme of struggle of
good against evil (“Seventh
symphony” by
Shostakovitch, “Sixth
symphony” by
Tchaikovsky). Music of such
great composers as
Beethoven and Wagner
always conveys strength,
courage and willpower.
Others prefer romantic
music, a world of rich
imagination of Chopin,
Schumann, Schubert and
Berlioz. The love of life and
the sparkling gaiety of most
pieces of Mozart have the
strongest appeal to
everybody. “The Marriage of
Figaro” alone is a wonderful
cure for pessimism or low
spirits. We have to mention
the brilliant historical
musical dramas of
Mussorgsky, the fascinating
fairytales of Rimsky
Korsakov, the deeply
psychological operas of
Tchaikovsky. No doubt,
Tchaikovsky is the best
known composer, we love
all his music, but especially
the sad feeling of his
symphonies and the solemn
beauty of the 1st piano
concerto.

Study the following text:
Music for the masses
The Glastonbury Festival is
an unforgettable sight. For
three days, 280 hectares of
peaceful farm country in
the beautiful Somerset
Valley become a vast,
colourful tent city. The
Glastonbury Festival is
Britain’s largest outdoor
rock concert, and it attracts
crowds of more than
100,000 people. It has six
separate stages for
musicians to play on. It has
eighteen markets where
fans can buy things. It has
its own daily newspaper
and is even broadcast live on
television. It also raises large
amounts of money for several
charities, including Greenpeace
and the Campaign for Nuclear
Disarmament.
Glastonbury is just one of many
events of the international music
festival calendar each year. For
dance music fans, there’s
Creamfields, the Essential
Festival and Homelands – all in
the UK. Rock fans have Roskilde
Festival in Denmark, Fuji Rock
and Summer Sonic in Japan, and
the Livid Festival and the Big
Day Out in Australia. And the
crowds just keep getting bigger.
In fact, the size of some of these
festivals is causing problems.
Since the deaths of nine people
in Roskilde in 2000 and the
death of a young woman at the
2001 Big Day Out, festival
organizers and local police have
been working together to make
sure festivalgoers stay safe.
Despite these tragic events,
festivals are more popular than
ever. And it’s not just about the
music. It’s about making new
friends and partying nonstop for
days at a time. It’s about dancing
till you can’t stand up anymore,
till you are completely exhausted
and then crashing in someone
else’s tent. Veteran music
journalist Koichi Hanafusa was
at the first Fiji Rock Festival in
1997. It was awesome! He
remembers the festival being hit
by a typhoon. “My greatest
memory was all those people
dancing to Rage Against the
Machine. They didn’t care
about the rain and the wind”,
he says. “I mean, that’s what
it’s all about”.

2. Робота з текстом по
методу INSERT
(Звучит музыка Вивальди)
Teacher: I am sure that you
know that music has a
medicinal effect on people. I
suggest you to read the text
about it. After that you will
fill in the table. I hope your
reading will be effective. Music
1. Music is not just
entertainment. It is
medicine for both the
brain and the body.
Don Campbell is an
expert on The
Mozart effect and the
incredible power of
music. He says that
all kinds of music,
from Mozart to jazz,
from Latin to rock
can affect our
learning and our
health.
2. Many people use
music to help them
feel relaxed after a
busy day at work.
Music can also
reduce the stress of
being ill, especially
by reducing pain.
The director of
Baltimore Hospital
says that thirty
minutes of classical
music has the same
effect as ten
milligrams of the
painkiller Valium.
3. Campbell also says
that music can help
you concentrate but
you need the right
kind of music for you
mood. And you need
to listen for about ten
minutes before you
start studying.
Perhaps your mind
needs relaxing or
maybe you are tired
and you want to feel more
energetic. So you should
choose the appropriate
music to help you. You
can use many different
kinds of music to help you
concentrate. Mozart’s
music is very popular,
however, because it is
very organized and it
makes your brain more
alert and imaginative.
4. Music helps you to study
better and it can also
actually make you more
intelligent. In one study,
students who listened to
Mozart before doing a test
got much higher marks
than those who didn’t.
Many students also show
that children who learn to
play a musical instrument
before the age of twelve
have better memories for
the rest of their lives.
5. As for me, I grew up
listening to classical
music. Mainly Beethoven,
Mozart and a lot of Italian
opera, and this is what I
love listening to in the
evening. Also I’m really
into jazz music, especially
singers like Louis
Armstrong and Nina
Simone. I would love to
sing like them or play an
instrument, the piano or
the guitar. So, yes, I love
music but not all types.
V
I know this fact
If you know the given
information – you put
a V ( tick) opposite
the sentence.
If the information
was new for you –
you mark it with a +.
If something was not
clear to you – you put
an? mark and ask
questions.
So let's start from the first
column. What was familiar
for you? What was new?
What was not clear to you?

3. Составление “fishbone”
Teacher: Now let’s read
teens’ opinions about music.
Has music a great power?
Pupils choose the facts,
explain the reasons and
make a conclusion.
1. Ana Filipe Silva,15
– I’m a true music lover.
Music makes me feel good
and sometimes I honestly
think that I have a song for
all the situations that happen
in my life. If I’m sad I listen
to a very calm song and if I
am happy I listen to a very
cool and loud one. That’s the
reason why music is so
important to me. I like
almost any type of music,
but like anyone else I have
my preferences, that are Ro,
House, Pop and I also like old songs of the 90’s, 80’s,
70’s … I’ve always liked
these types of music. So,
I’ve never changed my
musical tastes since I know
what music is. I don’t have
a favorite singer, or a
favorite group. I have many
groups that I appreciate,
like: Colplay, Bon Jovi,
Craig David, Guns’n Roses,
Sting,… I like them
because their music is my
favorite, but, as I’m
constantly searching
information about them on
the net if I don’t know
something about them.
2. Patricia Silva,15
– Music is a part of my
life. It’s like a soundtrack
that follows me every
minute of my daily routine.
In general I like Rock, Pop
and Country music. I hate
Fado and Kizomba because
I give much more
importance to the lyrics
than properly to the rhythm
and I think those kinds of
music don’t have “great”
lyrics. My musical tastes
have changed a lot along
these years. When I was
ten, I only listened to
Kizomba and Pop music,
and now I listen to Rock
and Pop, maybe by the
influence of my parents and
my friends. My favorite
singers at the moment are
Bon Jovi, Jonos Brothers,
Scorpions, Metallica,
ABBA, Tina Turner, Barrie
Tyler, Queen and Celine Dion. I
love these singers because in
their songs they convey
messages of love, happiness and
peace, and in my point of view
that the most important in life.
3. Claudia Rebelo.
I'm 23 and have loved listening
to and performing classical
music since the age of 8. A lot of
classical music pieces are used in
movies, commercials, tv shows,
and even rap. The progressions
are very similar across the board.
While I do love classical and
opera, I also can appreciate the
"garbage" that is on the radio
today. Someone took the time to
compose that music and it IS still
music.
