VI. Reading.
I am sure most of you listen to music, read some facts about your favorite singers or
musical groups. Now I`ll give you text and you should guess. Group 1. Michael Jackson
There were nine children in his family. They lived in a small four room house. Later
he lived in a house which has seventeen rooms downstairs and sixteen rooms
upstairs. It stands in 2,700 acres of ground. Besides the house there are guest houses,
a golf course, a swimming pool, tennis courts, stables, gardens, lakes, forests and a
zoo.
A lot of strange stories are told about him. It's difficult to decide whether they are
true or not. He never gave interviews and was rarely seen in public, except on stage.
Certainly his behavior may seem eccentric. In public he often wore a face mask to
protect himself from germs; he slept inside an oxygen capsule, which he believed
would help him to live longer. But his manager says that he wasn't eccentric. He was
just shy. He sang in public for the first time when he was five. Since that time he had
always been in the public eye. And since that time he had been working like a grown
up.
There were times when he came home from school and he only had time to put his
books and get ready for the studio. He often sang until late at night, even if it was
past his bedtime. There was a park across the street from the studio, and he looked at
the kids playing games. And he just stared at them in wonder — he couldn't imagine
such freedom, such a carefree life.
He said about himself that in the crowd he was afraid, on stage he was safe. Off stage
he felt happiest with animals and children. It's not a secret that his favorite hero was
Peter Pan.
He has been called "the child who never grew up", but I think he was a grownup
who was never allowed to be a child.
Group 2. The Beatles
This group to this day are one of the most famous and popular rock'n'roll groups in
the world. The group shattered many sales records and had more than fifty top hit singles. The group started a new era of music. Their music was unusual because
most rock was strong beat with no melody, and they added melody to the rock. The
group also added strong and meaningful lyrics.
The group included George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Richard
Starkey (Ringo Starr). All of them where born and raised in Liverpool, England. John
Lennon was the leader of the band, one of the two lead singers, the rhythm guitarist
and a song writer. George Harrison was the lead guitarist. Paul McCartney was a
song writer, one of the two lead singers, and a bassist. Ringo Starr played the drums.
They were discovered on November 9, 1961 by Brian Epstein, a manager of a record
store in Liverpool. Their early music was influenced by singers Bob Dilan, Chuck
Berry and Elvis Presley. Their first two song were Love Me Do and Please, Please
Me. After a while their own musical ideas started to emerge, and their music
developed from naive and simple to sophisticated. The group starred in two feature
films, A Hard Days Night, which earned 1.3 million dollars in its first week, and
Help. They also had their own full length cartoon called Yellow Submarine.
In 1964 the group came to New York City for the first time and were an instant
success. A couple of weeks later after their New York appearance, the five best
selling records were by the group; they became worldfamous. They introduced a
new style in clothing and appearance, too.
Group 3. Madonna
She is an American dancepop singersongwriter, record and film producer, dancer,
actress, author and fashion icon. She is noted for her ambitious music videos and
stage performances as well as using political, sexual, and religious themes in her
work.
In 2000, Guinness World Records listed her as one of the most successful female
recording artist of all time, with estimated worldwide sales of 120 million albums; in
2005, her record company credited her as having sold over 200 million albums
worldwide. She is one of the highest earning female singer of all time according to
both the 2007 Guinness Book of Records, and Billboard Magazine. Forbes magazine has estimated her net worth at $325 million. In addition, she holds the record for one
of the topgrossing concert tours by a female artist. Early life
she was born in Bay City, Michigan. She was the third of six children (Martin,
Anthony, Christopher, Paula, Melanie, Mario & Jennifer) born to Silvio "Tony"
Ciccone, an ItalianAmerican Chrysler engineer whose parents originated from
Pacentro, and she, who was of Quebecois descent.
She was raised in a Catholic family in the Detroit suburbs of Pontiac and Avon
Township (now Rochester Hills). Her mother died of breast cancer at age 30 on
December 1, 1963. Her father later married the family housekeeper, Joan Gustafson,
and they had two children together.
She convinced her father to allow her to take ballet classes. Her ballet teacher,
Christopher Flynn, exposed her to gay discotheques. She attended Rochester Adams
High School, where she was a straightA student and a member of the cheerleading
squad. She received a dance scholarship to the University of Michigan.
She left at the end of her sophomore year in 1978 and moved to New York City to
pursue a dance career. She has said:
"When I came to New York it was the first time I'd ever taken a plane, the first time
I'd ever gotten a taxicab, the first time for everything. And I came here with $35 in
my pocket. It was the bravest thing I'd ever done.”
She had little money and for some time lived in squalor, working lowpaying jobs
including a stint at Dunkin' Donuts. She also worked as a nude model. She studied
with Martha Graham and Pearl Lang, and later performed with several modern dance
companies, including Alvin Ailey and the Walter Nicks dancers.
VII. I am sure you have your favorite singers. I want you to work in groups. Turn to
each other. I want you to write some sentences about them. Then you will describe
your favorite singer and your classmates will guess the name of the singer.
Учащиеся работают в группах по 4 человека. Они описают любимого певца, не
называя его, а одноклассники должны угадать имя певца.
VIII. Let`s play. Игра «Снежный ком».
IX. Рефлексия.
Our travel is over. Let`s summarize the information. As we see music plays a very
important role in our life. What does it help?
Ответы учеников:
It helps us to relax, it makes us more emotional, it makes us think of our life and
change our opinion on our lifestyle. Music can enrich and inspire, entertain and
destroy. It appeals to our hearts and feelings.
You have red, blue and yellow cards on your tables. Raise the red card if you liked
the lesson. Raise the blue card if you did not like our lesson today. Raise the yellow
card if you liked our lesson but some things were difficult for you.
Учащиеся поднимают карточки и поясняют возникшие у них затруднения.
Open your diaries and write down our home task. Домашнее задание – написание личного письма о любимом певце.
