We live in Rostov region. It’s our native land. The main river is the river Don. And Rostov-on-Don is a large industrial, cultural and scientific capital of the South of Russia. This city has a great history and our region is named after it. Despite of the location Rostov region isn’t an agricultural¹ it is mainly industrial area. There are a lot of plants, factories and energy companies in Rostov region. Its population is more than 4 million people. These are the reasons of a great number of environmental problems.

Ecological problems of  Rostov region are:

- the high rate of air pollution² (especially in large towns);

-  the problem of water pollution (the lack of pure water);

- the solid waste³ (litter).

Pollution of the air is caused mainly by the industrial enterprises⁴ and transport, which combined emit millions of tons of solid and gaseous substances. The biggest industrial pollution source⁵ in Rostov region is State District Power Station in Novochercassk (Новочеркасская ГРЭС). And Rostov-on-Don takes the first place in the pollution of the air by transport. But agricultural transport spoil⁶ the atmosphere too. We have such air pollution in Azov district.

Water resources in Rostov region have low rate of quality. People always need the fresh water.  We uses water from the rivers and ground. 98% water, which is used in industry, agriculture, and in the home, returns to the river Don. The main sources of water pollution in Rostov region are Novocherkassk State District Power Station and Rostov Nuclear Power Station (Ростовская АЭС). Agricultural enterprises spoil the water by toxins.

Rostov region is not only high industrial but densely populated. The enterprises and the households produces a lot of solid waste (litter). We have many landfills⁷ near our towns, they occupies huge areas. And people often drop⁸ litter in the streets and leave it in the places for relax (parks, woods and riverbanks). It damage¹⁰ the wildlife.

All of these problems are studied and Rostov region is the leader in the realization of Eco-friendly programs now. Our government has developed and signed the documents for reducing⁹ the ecological damage¹⁰ and protecting our nature. And now we:

- rationally use of water resources;

- our industries use ecologically clean, and low-waste or waste-free technologies;

- build facilities for sort and recycle solid waste;

- light our streets and bus stops with lamps on solar batteries;

- teach our children to save the environment.
