The Supreme Court represents the third branch of government. It is made up of nine judges – the most important judges in the land. They have to make sure that the President and the Congress follow the Constitution. They decide what the Constitution and the laws passed by the Congress mean when there is an argument about their meaning. The judges work in the Supreme Court as long as they live.

The whole legislative power in the USA is vested in the Congress. There are two chambers in the US Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives. Besides the legislative function the Senate is entrusted with the power of ratifying or rejecting all treaties made by the President. The administrative business of the nation is conducted by Secretaries who form the Cabinet.
The President can veto laws passed by the Congress. The Congress can pass laws over the President’s veto by a two-third majority. The President appoints federal judges. The Court can declare presidential acts unconstitutional.

We say that the US judicial branch is more powerful than in some other countries because the Supreme Court is supposed to decide whether a law of the Congress or an executive order of the President is “Constitutional or not”.
