                                        Harry Potter

Harry Potter is a hero of a famous romance     by Joan Roling. The story of this magician made Roling one of The Richest Women of the year 2008. Harry Potter is a boy, who became a magician 11 years later. He has green eyes, a black hair and a thin body. Harry has been wearing glasses since his childhood. Harry’s parents died in the battle with the greatest evil magician Vol-de-mort.  Не became an orphan one or two years old.

After this awful tragedy Potter lived in a house of his aunt and uncle, and their son Dadley. Harry’s relatives were cruel to him making him do all the housework.

Harry went to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In the train he met Ronald Weasley, freckled, tall, red and thin boy, who lived in a seven-story house with five brothers, parents and a little sister.

Harry made friends with Rone and a girl Hermione by name, who was a usual girl. She weren’t a magician, but she got a letter from Hogwarts too.

When Harry and Rone saved Hermione’s live, their friendship became stronger.

Harry’s life in Hogwarts was not easy. Sometimes he was in danger, but remained alive, thanks to his bravery, determination and  his true friends.

My Favourite Literary Hero is Tom SawyerMy Favourite Literary Hero is Tom Sawyer

From the early age I've been fond of reading. When I was only five, my mum read or told me fairy-tales before going to bed. When I grew older, I started reading books myself.

One of the  books that I've read was "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain. Since then, my favourite  hero is Tom Sawyer. I admire the courage and inventiveness of this twelve-year old boy. He gets away nearly with everything, although he is often caught in trouble. He lives with his aunt Polly, his cousin Mary and his half-brother Sid. They don't get along well, because Sid is a positive hero, while Tom often misbehaves. He is rather careless and he likes showing off in front of other boys. His best friends are Huckleberry Finn and Joe Harper.

In my opinion, this hero represents childhood in all forms. He can easily get in love with a girl. His first love was Amy Lawrence, but later he fell in love with his classmate Becky Thatcher. He can run away with friends to an island to enjoy freedom. Apart from aunt Polly, Tom has a distant aunt Sally Phelps, who lives considerably far, down the river Mississippi. Aunt Polly is rather stern, but she has a loving and caring nature. She does care about Tom and his behavior. She genuinely worries when the boys disappear.

                         My Favourite Book

My favourite book is "Robinson Crusoe" by Daniel Defoe. D. Defoe (1660—1731) was a great master of realistic detail. The novel "Robinson Crusoe" was written in 1719. The novel is praise to human labour and the triumph of man over nature.

Defoe shows the development of his hero. At the beginning of the story we see an inexperienced youth, a rather frivolous boy, who then becomes a strong-willed man.

Robinson Crusoe's most characteristic trait is his optimism. His guiding principle in life become "never say die" and "in trouble to be troubled is to have your troubles doubled".

He had confidence in himself and in man. He believed it was within the power of man to overcome all difficulties. Crusoe was an enthusiastic worker and always hoped for the best.

Defoe is a writer of the Enlightenment. He teaches people how to live, he tries to teach what's good and what's bad. His novel "Robinson Crusoe" is not only a work of fiction, an account of adventures, a biography and an educational pamphlet.

It is a study of man, a great work showing man in relation to nature and civilization as well as in relation to labour and private property.

My favourite book is «The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes» by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I first discovered these stories when I was about twelve and I’ve loved them ever since. They’rebrilliantly written, full of  crimes and they’ve got a terrific Victorian atmosphere.

When you read them you really feel like you’ve been carried back to nineteenth-century London.

All the twentieth century detectives like Miss Marple and Inspector Morse seem really boringcompared to Sherlock Holmes.

That’s where Conan Doyle, really makes you believe that Holmes is unique  a genius withamazing mental powers.

Normally I only read detective stories once. I mean, why read them again when you know whathappens in the end?

With the Sherlock Holmes stories, though, its different.

Each time I re-read them I discover more and more to enjoy

«Gone with the Wind» by  Margaret Mitchell.

I've recently read a book which has made a very deep impression on me. It's called Gone with the Wind and it makes really unforgettable reading. The author of the book is Margaret Mitchell.

. It was first published in 1936 and became the talking point of all America. In 1939 it was made into a highly successful film. Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable played the leading roles. Vivien Leigh won the Oscar. Everyone loved her high-spirited and beautiful heroine, Scarlett O'Hara.

The story is set around the time of the American Civil War (1861-65) when the Southern States went to war with the North to defend their way of life. It was a way of life in which rich gentry lived in large houses and owned huge areas of land, cultivated by black slaves. Scarlett O'Hara was born into one of these rich houses. When this way of life was destroyed and all her family's wealth taken away by the advancing Northerners, the spoilt, willful Scarlet had to grow up and use all her wit and intelligence — and beauty — to build a new life.

But Gone with the Wind is also about a love triangle. While Scarlett loves the quiet, gentlemanly Ashley Wilkes, the wild and decidedly ungentlemanly Rhett Butler is in love with her. After Ashley marries someone else, and after many adventures of her own, Scarlett does marry Rhett — but only for money.

The marriage is stormy and eventually Rhett walks out on her, but by that time Scarlett has realized that she loves him after all. Scarlett thinks of some way of getting him back, but we never know if she does.

                                       My Favourite Book

My favourite book is "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. This story is one of the well-known works of the writer. The author depicts the characters of the old man and the boy and their relations very vividly and skillfully. Santiago, the old man, was one of the writer's beloved characters. The old man was a born fisherman, but he was not a butcher and fished only for a living. He was very lonely. He had a devoted friend - the boy, Manolin. The boy loved the old man for his kind heart, his devotion to the sea. Manolin was like a son to Santiago. He took care of the old man's food and his belongings. The old man was glad to pass his experience to the boy. He looked forward to going to the sea together with the boy. All Santiago's life had been in preparation for the battle with big fish. He knew that he had been born for this and it was time to prove it. A strong man at last had met a strong fish. The battle was a difficult one and full of danger. Though the sharks had eaten the fish and nothing had left but the backbone, the old man had morally won the battle. Santiago's words "man can be destroyed but not defeated" are the main idea of this story. "The Old Man and the Sea" is a masterpiece for its imaginative language and the description of nature.

                                            Alice in Wonderland

Books have always interested and attracted me. From the very childhood I like listening to my grandmother’s stories. She normally told me some popular fairy tales, including Cinderella, Masha and the Bear, Beauty and the Beast.

My favourite book was about Alice in Wonderland, which was written by a well-known English writer Lewis Carroll. It’s a story about a curious little girl, named Alice, who falls down a rabbit hole and meets lots of strange creatures there. When it comes to this fairy tale, I’m ready to hear, read or watch it infinite many times. I liked every moment of this tale, for example, when Alice drinks the magic syrup and becomes small enough to sneak into an attractive garden. Later, she eats a piece of cookie and becomes of a tremendous size. She cries so much that her tears flood the hallway. When she becomes small again, she has to swim through her own tears. The tale is full of such abstract incidents, but they are setting wonderful atmosphere.

During her trip Alice meets many friends in this imaginary world. One of them is the White Rabbit, who is always in a hurry. Another noteworthy character is the Cheshire Cat, who has a distinctive mischievous grin. One of my favourite parts from the book “Alice in Wonderland” is “A Mad Tea-Party” with the Hatter and the March Hare. They seemed to be having such a good time. Perhaps, the worst character of the fairy tale is the Queen of Hearts. Her favourite phrase is: “Off with their heads!”. She nearly killed Alice for being disobedient. Each time I heard this tale, I imagined being in this fantasy world and walking the same routes Alice did.

                                              Jane Eyre

I was impressed with 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte.

It is a moving love story with the happy ending, set in the Victorian England. The author tells simple and quite traditional story of a poor girl, Jane, having deep  feelings to her married master, Edward Rochester. I think  Jane Eyre is one of the great romantic heroines of world literature.   Jane due to her personal talents, exceptional inner features and moral convictions, found her true love and happiness.

I admired everything in this book: the plot, the characters, the style and, especially, the author's emotional honesty. Readers can find many attractions in this novel: tender heroine, self-devotion, painful separation, dark mystery, catastrophe, happy ending. Without doubt, this book is highly-prized by readers, literary critics, and researchers.

I have learned that there are twenty-two films, nine TV versions of the novel, several ballets, an opera, and a couple of musicals based on the novel 'Jane Eyre'. Some people would say that this story is a little bit naive for a modern reader, who is spoiled by pragmatism of our epoch. Sometimes I was irritated by the passiveness of Jane Eyre. But such involvement the reader into the plot of the novel is the mark of a true writer's talent.
