Проект учащихся о развитии спорта в Австралии.
Teacher: And now, pupils, some facts about Australia.
Do you know...?
...that the word “kangaroo” appeared in 1770? On their voyage of discovery to
Australia Captain Cook’s sailors captured a young kangaroo. They had never seen
such animals and they asked the Aborigines about its name. The natives did not
understand the sailors’ language and they said “What did you say?” many times.
So, the question sounded like “kangaroo”.
...why Australian farmers use many fences? They often travel many miles to check
fences. The fences keep the sheep in, they also keep out rabbits which eat valuable
pasture; the fences protect soil erosion.
...that Lake George is known as the “disappearing Lake”? Its water level rises and
falls depending on the amount of silt (sand, mud) brought by streams.
...that emus live in the state of Victoria? Emus are flightless birds with small
wings. The emu uses his legs as defence, can run long distances very quickly, and
is a strong swimmer.
...that there are about ninety spicies of shark in Australia? The most popular
bathing beaches are netted which does not allow shark attack.
...that Australian aborigines can make fire without matches? They can make it by
rotating a pointed stick in a hole in another piece of wood.
...that the black swan is the emblem of Western Australia? The bird was first
sighted in 1697 by a Dutch explorer. The Swan River at Perth is named after the
bird.
...that Sydney’s buses and ferries carry nearly 200 million passengers a year:
=more than 11 times the total population of Australia!
=nearly four times the population of Britain. =three quarters of the population of the United States of America.
В конце урока вновь сцена в «Туристическом бюро»:
Well, did you like the information? Have you chosen the route?
Yes, of course. I liked everything. But I must advise with my family. I’ll do it
and tell you my decision.
