What’s in a Face?
Physiognomy & Graphology
A lesson by Olga Tasenyuk,
ELT of HC
Moscow Physiognomy & Graphology
I. Our theme today is physiognomy & graphology.
a) So, what is physiognomy? – It’s the ability to tell what a person’s character
is like from his/her face or face and body.
b) What is graphology? – It’s the ability to tell what a person’s character is
like from his/her handwriting.
The Victorians believed that it was possible to spot a criminal before the act by his
set of features. Physiognomy was very popular in the 19th century. E.g.: a large,
prominent jaw was a sign of passion; a narrow, sloping forehead was a sign of low
intellect; widenostrilled nose showed strong powers of thoughts.
Physiognomists were interested in crime and built up a picture of a criminal type:
the narrow, sloping brow, prominent jaw, snub and flat nose. The faces of
criminals were examines carefully to see how well they corresponded to the
stereotype. This stereotype was based on the belief that criminals were a race in
themselves. The father of this theory was psychiatrist Lambrasow.
Studies since then have shown that criminals display a variety of features, just like
anybody else. It’s really so: everybody watches TV and from time to time we see
in some programs faces of different criminals and we think, “It’s impossible!
He/she looks so nice! It can’t be so.”
Well, the conclusion: it’s possible to speak not about criminal or not criminal type
but about passionate, happy, quarrelsome, etc types.
b) So, let’s pass to Reading for information (exam practice: Use of English –
Open Cloze text – part 2, word formation part 5).
WB. ex. 1, p.53 “Reading faces”
ex. 3, p.54 “Show me your face and I’ll tell
you who you are”.
Thanks. I think it’s rather interesting.
II. OK. The main activity now. Work on the text “Face to Face” ( SB p. 85)
Reading. While reading do the tasks: 1. match each part of the text with
pictures. Let’s check up. 2. choose the most suitable heading from the list. Don’t forget: one is extra. (E). Multiple matching (exam practice: part 1).
Let’s check up.
Now, please, do the following thing. Ex. 3. I don’t want you to choose a face
type that best describes you or your friend, but choose a face, that best describes
me. Don’t be afraid of offending me: a face is a face, a type is a type and a
character is a character. Let’s check up. (The bony type, picture c).
I’m not going to put you in an uncomfortable position and ask you if this
description suits my personality. I can see myself and I can estimate myself.
Only one thing – I hate farming. If you remember the text “Reading Faces”,
you’ll understand me. That’s OK. Thank you.
4. Let’s pass to the second part of Main activity: Listening (exam practice:
part 2). SB p. 87, ex. 1, 2
Look at these samples of handwriting. All of these notes are quotations from W.
Sh.’s plays. Listen to the tape. We are short of time, so I ask you to do both of
the tasks simultaneously:
1. Which one of these samples is being discussed?
2. Blank filling. Let’s check up.
That’s all. One lesson isn’t enough for the questions we’ve touched upon. I
hope it was informative and cognitive. Thank you for your work and
attention. I don’t know weather you’ve liked the theme and material, or
the way they have been given, but for me this subject is interesting. Thank
you once more.
