Lead-in: if this is your first lesson with this class, ask everyone to take a piece of
paper and write as many English words as they remember in one minute. Share
ideas as a class, asking each student to read out a word from their list. They must
not repeat a word that has already been said.
Ex.1, p.4 Draw students’ attention to the photo. Ask questions from the book and
help with comprehension if necessary, by saying for example: How old is she/he?
Fifteen / sixteen / seventeen? possibly write the numbers on the board while
speaking. Students guess the ages of the people in the photo.
Ex.2, p.4 Playing the dialogue (1.01). After playing the dialogue ask students: So,
how old is Ben? How old is Francesca? If time allows ask students: So, how old are
you?
Ex. 3, p.4 Play the alphabet for students (1.02) then model it for them to repeat in
groups and of 2-4 letters. Students repeat chorally and individually. Point out the
easily confused G and J. Suggest some abbreviations which the students may know:
DJ, GPS.
Ex. 4, p.4 Play the recording twice (1.03), pausing after each name. Play as many
times as students need to write the names. Then write the names on the board,
saying each letter aloud when writing.
Ex. 5, p.4 Ask students to think of the names of three famous people. Ask students
to spell out the names in pairs.
Ex.6, p.4 Play the numbers (1.04) for students then model the pronunciation for
them to repeat in groups of 3-4.
Ex.7, p.4 Ask students to walk around the class saying numbers from 1-20 and
then reverse from 20 – 1.
Ex. 8, p.4 Play the recording (1.05) twice then play again if required. Then play
again with pauses after every name and write them on the board.
Ex. 9, p.4 Students do the task individually and then compare answers in pairs.
Ex.10, p.4 Work on the pronunciation of the questions. Play (1.06) each question
several times and ask students to repeat them chorally and individually Ex.11, p.4 Students work in pairs on their dialogues.
Ex.12, p.4 Ask 3-4 pairs to act out the dialogues. Provide feedback, praise the
performance and correct a few mistakes.
If time allows, do this optional activity from the teacher’s book.
Rounding up: Ask students :”What have we talked about today?”
Elicit “Introductions and saying “hello” or “how old are you”? Draw
students’ attention to
the lesson “I can introduce myself’ statement.
