CATHEDRALS AND CHURCHES OF ROSTOV-ON-DON
Rostov-on-Don is one of the most beautiful cities in the south of Russia. It became the hometown for people of different nationalities, cultures and religions for all times. Therefore, in the city, there are not only Orthodox Christian churches and cathedrals but of other confessions too.
One of the most famous is the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary with a tall steeple standing nearby. Here on the cathedral square there is a monument to Metropolitan Demetrius of Rostov in whose honour the city Rostov-on-Don was named. The cathedral was built in 1781 by a famous Russian architect K.A. Tone who also created the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Grand Kremlin Palace and the Armoury in Moscow. It is the main temple of the Archdiocese of Rostov. Here there is the Archdiocese Administration and the Episcopal chair of the Archbishop of Rostov and Novocherkassk Panteleimon. The Cathedral is like a reduced copy of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.
The Intercession Church is the first one in Rostov-on-Don . It was built in the fortress of St. Anne in 1735. The fortress lost its strategic importance to the middle of the 18th century. The commandant Somov, carrying a garrison [ˈgærɪsn] on the right bank of the Don, ordered to move here the Intercession Church. In 1781, Major-General Semen Gurev petitioned the Archbishop of Smolensk and Kherson Nicephorus to build a new church which was completed in 1784. The second Intercession Church in Rostov-on-Don existed until 1917. At request of residents of the city in February 2005, at the Kirov Park the reconstruction of the Intercession Church was started.
Surp Khach Church or Holy Cross Church is an 18th-century Armenian church. It is the oldest surviving monument in the borders of Rostov-on-Don. It was built in 1786-1792. The Church complex of Prepolovensky temple is located in the Zheleznodorozhniy area of Rostov-on-Don in Vsesoyuznaya Street. Previously, it was called Cossack village Gnilovskaya and was inhabited by newcomer Russians. There were 2 thousand people in this village, who had successfully engaged in fishing and trading with merchants from different provinces of Russia. In 1765, the residents of the village built a small chapel in the name of the Holy Trinity, and in 1784, instead of it, the Trinity wooden church without a bell tower was laid. The construction of the first stone church in Gnilovskaya was associated with the flourishing of an economic life and spiritual needs of the Orthodox Cossacks. Since 1991, divine services were resumed and held in the building of a male college attached to the temple earlier. By the end of 2001 the Cathedral was rebuilt in its original form.

The Temple of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Rostov-on-Don is located on Kosmonavtov Avenue. In 1996 in the vicinity of the former Armenian monastery Surb Khach the Orthodox Parish of Kazan icon of Mother of God was founded. The area was very large, and the church was missing on this land. At first the temporary house of prayer was erected, and then the construction of a new church was started. The first foundation took place on 11 September 2004. The archbishop of Rostov and Novocherkassk Panteleimon did the consecration of the place for construction. Today, this Cathedral stands on a hill and is clearly visible from all sides. The church building and the bell tower are built of brick. The bell tower with a spiral staircase has a belfry of 9 bells. The divine services are conducted daily.
