The geography of New Zealand.
The geography of New Zealand includs two main islandes (the North
and South Islands, Te-Ika-a-Maui and Te Wai Pounamu in Māori)
and a number of smaller islands. The dramatic and varied
landscape of New Zealand has made it popular for tourists. Neighbouring
countries include Australia to the northwest and Tonga and Fiji to the north.
New Zealand is in Oceania, in the South
Pacific Ocean
at 41°S 174°E. It has an area of 268,680 square
kilometres (including Antipodes Islands, Auckland Islands, Bounty
Islands,
Campbell Islands, Chatham Islands,
and Kermadec Islands), making it slightly smaller than
Italy and Japan and a little larger than the United Kingdom. These islands are
the main areas of land that emerged from the largely submerged continent of Zealandia. New Zealand has 15,134 km of
coastline and extensive marine resources. The country claims the
seventh-largest zone in the world, covering over four million square kilometres
more than 15 times its land area. It has no land borders.
The South Island is the largest land mass. The island is divided along its length by the Southern Alps, the highest peak of which is Aoraki/Mount Cook at 3754 metres.
Lake
Wakatipu and Lake Pukaki are
inland glacial lakes (finger lakes) (310 meters above sea level).
Mountains are on the background. It is southern
New Zealand Alps. There are 18 peaks of more
than 3000 metres in the South Island. The east side of the island has the Canterbury Plains while the West
Coast is famous for its rough coastlines,
and Fox and Franz
Josef Glaciers. Ice clefts (cracks) in the glacier body formed during melting
process.
This is an amazing Mountain waterfall is on the slope of France Joseph
Glacier ancient valley.
Lake Pukaki is the largest of three roughly parallel alpine lakes running north-south along the northern
edge of the Mackenzie
Basin on New
Zealand's South
Island. The others are Lakes Tekapo and Ohau. All three lakes were created when the terminal moraines of receding
glaciers blocked their respective valleys. The glacial feed to the lakes gives
them a distinctive blue colour, created by glacial flour. Panorama of the Lake Pukaki. It
is the typical mountain glacial lake. It is 480
meters above sea level.
Waiho river, flowing from the France Joseph Glacier,is one of the longest rivers.
The North Island is less mountainous than the South, and is marked by
volcanism. The island's tallest mountain, Mount Ruapehu (2797 m ) is an active volcano. Lake Taupo is near the centre of the North Island and is the largest
lake by surface area in the country. It lies in a caldera created by the Oruanui eruption, the largest eruption in the world in the past 70,000
years. You can see the special images of the nature: natural landscapes:
