Warm up. “Think break” strategy
activities)
Ss divide into groups by getting cards with the names of countries
and the languages. E.g. 1st group – countries, 2nd group – languages
China Mandarin Chinese
England – English, etc.
Books closed. Ss make a list of the most widely spoken languages in
the world in 30 seconds.
T. puts the languages that students come up with on the board and
then asks the Ss to name countries where each of those languages is
spoken as a first language, e.g. English is spoken in the UK, the USA,
Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc.
T. asks Ss to look at the pictures on the board and answer the
questions to brainstorm.

Reading the text.
T. asks some Ss to read an article intelligibly. Pay attention to the
highlighted words.
Task 1. Read the highlighted words. Find the definitions of the
phrasal verbs with the help of “Word jumble race” strategy
Each group is given cards with written jumbled phrasal verbs and
definitions. Groups must find the definitions of the phrasal verbs. As
a help they should look at the phrasal verbs in context in the article to
determine their meaning. Then they stick their definitions to the
board.
