Part I. Introduction
Nowadays
young people like standing out. It is impossible imagine a modern teenager
without such attributes as a mobile phone, player, jeans, T-shirt with any logo
or label. Today’s youth is like in a mirror, reflects new trends, current
problems and the interests of society.
This also applies to teenagers. One of
excretory traits is the labels on the clothes. Now teenagers try to buy clothes
with bright large foreign words.
The problem is that not everyone knows the
meaning of the labels on the clothes.
However, whether the owners of things fully consider the meaning of the inscriptions on clothing, especially if they are written in a foreign language, most often in English?
My work is devoted to the study of English content of the labels on
the clothes of teenagers.
The relevance of the chosen theme is that
things with the words have become an integral part of modern teenagers'
wardrobe. Clothes became, in a sense, the tribune, from which one person has
the opportunity to tell the world about the specifics of his character.
The novelty of this work is defined in the
study and identification of English content of the labels on the clothes.
The object of study is inscriptions in English on the clothes of the students of our
school.
The study of my research is the information that is on the label on
clothing.
The aim of the research is to reveal the level of understanding the
meanings of foreign labels on clothes by students of our school.
Tasks to achieve this goal:
• Review of scientific literature on the issue.
• To conduct a social survey among the students to learn the most popular labels on the clothes.
• Translate popular labels on the clothesin the Russian language.
• Identify the age of the owner of the labels on the clothes.
• To analyze the collected material and to come to a definitive conclusion.
Hypothesis is after researching English
labels on clothing, students will approach more seriously to the selection of
clothing with text.
The work was carried out in stages:
• Preparation of basic information.
• Analysis and comparison of the collected
labels.
• The designation of the findings and results of
the research.
When writing this research work the following
methods were used: experimental to conduct questionnaires and definitions
according to the labels on the clothes on the age of the teenager; exploratory
and descriptive, involving the analysis of linguistic factors; analytical, involving
a comparative analysis of selected labels.
My work is divided into two parts: theoretical
and practical. In the second part I have considered elements such as the
appearance of the labels on the clothes; people need to wear clothes with
labels. In the third part of the work I present the results of processing of
the returned questionnaires, linguistic examination of the inscriptions.
Part II. 2.1 Evolution of the labels on the clothes
The history
of inscriptions on clothing started many centuries ago. And the earliest ones
are known to us from ancient Greece, where embroideries were on the belts that
told about the names of the owners. There were labels in fashion that very
often were part of the ornament.
Then they can be seen on many Italian and German portraits of the end of the XV and XVI centuries, lettering woven into the pattern of men's shirts, women's dresses corsages, where usually written in Latin or mottos of a noble family, or the names of owners of these portraits or outfits. And if we talk about the more modern period, inscriptions decorated the form of workers, indicating their status at the workplace, then they started to show the designer or the firm is this thing, and after that they began to appear on labels that actually carry the meaning. It is unknown fact the first who came up with to write the labels on the clothes[1].
The labels are different and change as a person is growing up. The children have just a sort of funny word on their clothes, the teenager has quotes, replica of the movie characters, loud and bombastic slogans, sometimes even bordering with obscenities ... Adults realize that the inscriptions on the clothes may mean something not for their age or something obscene, try to choose clothes without labels and it is the right solution, unlike teenagers who only look at the beautiful style and fun.[2]Well, let's condescending to teenagers for their self-confidence, there are any means are good! Over the years, people choose the clothes with labels more seriously and want the words expressed their true convictions or hinted at something secret.
2.2 Is it stylish item or provocation?
As we
have already noted, an indispensable attribute of youth wardrobe are T-shirts.
T-shirts with funny slogans are especially popular among young people in Europe
and America, who selects them according to their nature and world view.
Nowadays "thematic" T-shirts are less popular in Russia.
It can be explained that still a large category of young Russians don’t know the foreign (particularly English) language very well, so incidents with inscriptions on clothes meet us constantly. Basically, youth chooses T-shirts with slogans whose meanings can be understood by devoted people, who really know English. As a rule, they are all obscene. Decent inscriptions on youth T-shirts look something like this: "Get the 1$ Diamond" (получи бриллиант за 1 доллар) "Beautiful stranger" (Прекрасный иностранец), "Shining star" (Сияющая звезда). There are, of course, funnier ones: "Call now! I will save you! Soviet secret agent" (Позвони сейчас.Я спасу тебя. Советский секретный агент) or "Mrs. Justine Timberlake". The characters of the comics, anime and doll faces are often depicted on T-shirts[3]. But they are not very popular among our young people.
Young people may not believe, but those who are older probably confirm that two decades ago, before the appearance of a man on the street in clothes with a strange English inscription meant in the eyes of the public as a provocation and challenge. However, all people secretly envied the owner of the imported item of clothes who was not afraid to stand out among the masses. Another thing - today! Children, young and not so young people wear clothes with labels in English and all around perceive them as a stylish element.
2.3 Inscriptions in English.
Is it a tribute to fashion or something else?
Many people tend to buy clothes exclusively
with inscriptions in a foreign language. What do they mean by that? If nothing,
this is really a tribute to fashion. But the T-shirt is still like a blank
sheet for writing. Only slogans on T-shirts in English should be treated with
caution, because a smart idea may sound ridiculous, if improperly formulated it
in a foreign language. The same can be said about standard ready-made phrases
because failed selected ones will become nothing more than an incident in clothing.
The Labels are very different. They can tell
us a lot about the person, in particular that this person does not understand
what is written on his clothes.
“What does person want to say when he put on a
garment with any inscription?” Many young people answer this question,
"Nothing, it’s just a fun!", but not all of them.
Nowadays the powerful jet "joined” the wave of 80th in fashion. As you know, the cult thing of that time was a T-shirt with the slogan, which could say everything you wanted to say to the world.
In general such item of clothing like T-shirt, from the moment of its birth was considered as a "talkative" thing. There are some culturological researches on the theme that a T-shirt is a “blank slate" for slogans and statements, as well as a place for demonstration of person’s life credo. As you can see, the society successfully uses this privilege. And there are the stars of show business that are ahead of the rest.
2.4 We are responsible for what is written on clothes
The
labels on the clothes must be treated with caution. Surroundings often perceive
them as words spoken aloud by the owner of fashionable clothes. If you do not
support written on your garment words, why are you wearing it? Not so long ago there
was sparked an international scandal affecting Germany and China. Over the last
couple of years nearly two dozen cases were recorded in strange inscriptions on
T-shirts, made in Arabic, or understandable in English, but with
"jokes"[4] about bombs,
security never allowed the owner of such clothes to a flight in the plane.
Thus, to paraphrase a famous phrase, we can say that we are responsible for
what is written on our clothes.
Conclusion: the labels on the clothes existed many centuries ago. Both children and adults carry on clothes in English - all perceive them as a stylish finishing element. And this is really a tribute to fashion. The labels on the clothes in English should be treated with caution, because a smart idea may sound ridiculous, if improperly formulated it in a foreign language. We are responsible for what is written on our clothes. And if that was indeed the case, consider the English examples of the labels on the clothes of our students.
The labels on the clothes should be treated cautiously. Surroundings often perceive them as the words spoken aloud by a host of trendy outfit, which is natural. If it is not so, the question is: "If you do not support the words that are written on your clothing, why do you put it on yourself?”
So, to paraphrase the famous quotation, we can say - we are responsible for what is written on our clothes.
Part III. The practical part
3.1 The Methodology of the study
We will
look at examples of labels on the clothes of the students of our school. We
found the students in our school, wearing T-shirts, sweaters, trousers, jeans
and other items of clothing that contained different inscriptions in English,
copied them or took photos and asked young people some questions. We were
interested in the age of a person, the knowledge of the translation of the
label, information about the possible grammatical and spelling errors in the
inscriptions, and also the reason why they bought this thing. We recorded and
analyzed the responses of 30 respondents. I conducted a survey among students
in grades 5-9 in our school to identify a particular view on labels on the
clothes. My main goal was to reveal the level of understanding by pupils of our
school the meaning of foreign labels on their clothes.
The questions were as follows: (Appendix 1)
1) When do you buy clothes, you are attracted to the writings on it?
2) Do you wear clothes with labels in English?
3) If you wear clothes with foreign labels, do you know the translation?
4) Do you notice the grammatical or lexical errors in a foreign label on your clothes?
Next, I photographed or recorded the
inscriptions from the clothes.
Translated inscriptions in the Russian
language, filled in the tables with the results of the survey.
I analyzed the responses of about 30 students, which can be reflected graphically in the following tables. (Appendix 2)
3.2 The student survey results
According to our survey, the majority of students have clothes containing English inscriptions in their wardrobes. Of all the respondents, only about 30% of the pupils know the translation of the inscriptions, which they have on the clothes, they also noted that they pay attention to the label when they buy these things. The remaining 70% found it is difficult to translate the inscriptions, after these signs were translated for them; they confessed that they never thought about the meaning of what is written on their clothes, but now are interested in it and will translate all inscriptions that are written on their garments. During the survey process, the interest to the inscriptions increased among students and we could really watch the students that read and tried to translate what was written on their clothes.
Labels can be grouped into several groups on the following topics:
1. A romantic \ love
2. Motto (i.e. belief, world vision)
3. Calling
4. Spelling and grammar mistakes
5. Others
6. Cartoon heroes
7. Designers and firms
8. Cities/towns
During the research we found inscriptions containing grammatical and spelling mistakes, which were not indicated by the owners. There were inscriptions simply consisting of an arbitrary set of letters. The meanings of these labels are absent. We didn’t found any inscriptions with obscene content.
Thus, we can state that the majority of the students do not attach special significance to the inscriptions on their clothing, which in their turn can contain obscene and offensive meanings, grammatical and spelling mistakes. However, our study has managed to bring to the surface this issue and to offer adolescents to think before they buy another fancy thing with a strange text.
3.3 The Conclusions. The analysis of collected material
According to our research the majority of
students have the items of clothing that contains captions in English in their
wardrobe. Only about 30% of all respondent students know the translation of the
inscriptions, which have on their clothes, they also noted that they pay
attention to the label when buying things. The remaining 70% ones couldn’t
translate the inscriptions, when these inscriptions were translated for them;
they admitted that they never thought about the meaning of what is written on
them, but now they are interested in it and will translate everything that is
written on their clothing. During the study, students' interest in the
inscriptions was increased very much.
Our study shows that extremely relevant and
important fact is that we are responsible for the information we bear. In some
sense we are in solidarity with it, and become its media to the masses. It is
extremely imprudent to hope that all around us don't know a foreign language
and do not understand what is written on our clothes. We should not forget that
“Judge not of men and things at first sight” – «встречают по одежке, а провожают по уму».
Part IV. Conclusion
So, answering the question posed in the introduction: do teenagers focus on the meaning of the inscription in English, found that only 30% of students buying an item focused on the translation of English phrases. Students indicated that the difficulties in translation don't stop them from buying the products. 70 % of students do not pay attention to the translation of the inscriptions and perceive them as a decoration of clothing. Analysis of the collected material showed that the level of English proficiency, which was determined by age of the respondent students of our school helps to orientate in inscriptions and use written informationproperly. Thus, the hypothesis was confirmed: students examine English labels on clothingmore carefully andthey approach to the selection of clothing with slogans more seriously.
