Ход урока 1. Учитель: Who really discovered America? 2. Ответ учеников. ­You are right. And what’s here at the screen?  ­American sights. ­Yes. Today we’ll speak about American natural sights. For centuries, Christopher Columbus has managed to capture the public  imagination and is remembered in history as the man who discovered America.  Despite the fact that this is clearly not true, it has become impossible to turn this  'history' on its head. Columbus had actually set off in search of India and it is clear  from his diary that this is what he thought he had found. Moreover, people had  been living in America, the land he 'discovered' , for many thousands of years  before he arrived. It is difficult to know why his reputation has survived so long. Columbus wasn't even the first European to reach America. That had already  happened 500 years before. In 982, Eirik the Red, chief of the Viking tribes on the  island of Iceland, set sail and with the many people who went with him, set up a  colony on the coast of Greenland. It is in this light that we should judge the achievements of Columbus. In many  ways he was certainly a hero, but the fact remains that he is famous for something  that was achieved by someone 500 years before.  2. Ответить на вопросы Why is Columbus remembered in history?  Is it true or not?  What can you say about this fact?  Where had he actually set off?  Why do people think so?  What about the people living on that land? Russia’s claim to Alaska went back to the early eighteenth century, when Vitus  Jonassen Bering explored the region. However, the Russians considered their  North American territory an economic wasteland, and made little effort to develop  or colonize the region. Russia initially approached the United States about selling  the territory in 1860, during President James Buchanan’s administration,but  negotiations were delayed by the Civil War. The negotiations were concluded with the signing of a treaty on March 30, 1867.  Under the terms of the treaty, the U.S. acquired full control of the former Russian  possession for a price of $7,200,000, or approximately 2 cents an acre for the  586,412­square­mile territory. Seward’s thinking appeared less foolish by the late 1890s, when the discovery of  gold greatly increased Alaska’s value as a U.S. possession. У 2 America’s Last Great Wilderness. Many people have come north to the largest state in the U.S. to look for a more  peaceful life, or to enjoy the beauty of nature and the freedom of Alaska’s wide  open spaces. Some newcomers prefer a life alone in the wilderness. Other people  come to Alaska’s growing cities to work in the fishing and lumber industries and  the oil business. There are several very large national parks in Alaska. Mt. McKinley in Denali  National Park is 20,230 feet high. It is the highest mountain in North America. At  Glacier Bay National Park, huge walls of ice move slowly down from the  mountains into the sea. The glacier walls are about two hundred feet high at the  ocean’s edge.  One of the most special things about Alaska is the wildlife. You can see thousands  of caribou crossing the flat grasslands of the north, and huge grizzly bears in the  forests. In the fall, salmon swim up the Chilkat River and bald eagles gather in the  trees above. Both visitors and local people hunt the great wild animals for food and for sport. And many Alaskan Natives, including Eskimos, Aleuts and Athapascan  tribal people, still live in the old way and catch animals, whales and fish.  Учитель   У 3 Niagara Falls. The Niagara Falls are on the Niagara River between the United States and Canada.  The Niagara Falls are the largest waterfalls in America. The Niagara Falls are very  beautiful. Thousand of tourists come from all over the world to see them. Today  the Niagara Falls make electricity, which goes to towns and cities in the United  States and in Canada.   : You've got the texts about the Niagara Falls.. The noise of the falling water is so great that it is heard as far as twenty­five  kilometres away. The water of the Niagara River is falling from a hill fifty­seven  metres high. The falls can move very large stones and throw them into the water. Yellowstone, the First National Park. Yellowstone is the United States’ first and most famous national park. This large  wilderness area is very high in the Rocky Mountains of the northwestern U. S. It includes large areas of Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho, and it is bigger than the  smallest state in the U.S. Yellowstone became the world’s first national park in 1872 and has many different kinds of unusual scenery. Although millions of people visit the park, the land is  still unchanged – still a wilderness. The valley of the Yellowstone River has  beautifully coloured rocks and three large waterfalls. In the early morning or  evening, visitors sometimes see moose, large deer­like animals, or buffalo eating  grass along the shores of  Lake Yellowstone.  In winter, Yellowstone Park is covered with heavy snow, but visitors still come to  ski and skate. With clouds of steam above them and snow all around,  Yellowstone’s hot springs look even more wonderful. 6) Are these statements true or false?  Yellowstone is the United States first and most famous national park.  Yellowstone National Park is bigger than the largest state in the U. S.  Millions of people visit the park.
