The text under analysis is an extract from the novel of J.G. “The man of Property”. The text presents a narration and character-sketch(эскиз). The author gives a portrayal(портрет) of James Forsyte directly through the thoughts of James Forsyte himself. The text is written in a rather(достаточно) emotional and ironical style. The text can be divided(делиться) into three parts. In the first part G. describes James walk through the park. The key word is battle field. The author compared(сравнивает) the field through which James walked with a battlefield. The metaphor is strengthened(подкрепляется) by the simile “couples lying like corpses ” and emotional words “turmoil(беспорядочный)of the struggle(борьба)”. This sustained(поддерживается) metaphor is used to stress(чтобыподчеркнуть) the idea that all our life is struggle. But for James this struggle at life was in the past. The author says “meditatively”(задумчиво). This struggle awaked no fancies(фантазия) in his mind “he had outlived(пережил) that kind imagination”. James like his son Soams was very neat(опрятный) and tidy(аккуратный) in his manners and appearance(внешнийвид). This is shown in the sentence “holding his umbrella carefully by the wood, so as to keep the ferrule(обруч, мет. наконечник) off the ground, and not fray(трепаться) the silk in the middle”. While walking James practical mind keeps working about routine problems of life, about tenant(арендатор) not paying his rent and remarks (отмечает) about Swithin rather(весьма) ironically “it had served his right - he had held on took long” In the second part the author describes relationships between James and his son Soams. The key sentence here is “a lack(отсутствие) of sentiment peculiarly(особенно)Forsyten”. G. stress the fact that father and son were rather reserved(сдержанный) and never showed externally(внешний) their love and attachment(привязанность) to each other. But the idiom “blood is thicker(толще) than water” suggests(предполагает) that father and son did love each other and took care “of each other’s welfare(благосостояние)”. This is shown in the metaphor “they regarded(рассматривать) one another as an investment(инвестиции) and were each other’s solicitous(сбережение)” Being an old man James did not lose his interest in life and enjoyed some pleasures of life. His primary(основной) pleasure and joy(радость) were his children. As the author remarks “the prime motive of his existence(существование)”. He was happy at the thought that he could transmit(передавать) his money to his children who were part of himself. This part at the text is completed by a very emotional sentence “ the kernel(ядро) of his life was in this saving for his children”. In the 3rd part James compares himself with his brothers. G. gives terse(краткий, немногословный) description of the Forsytebrothers through James eyes. We see that James is of a rather high opinion of himself. He characterizes himself as “sane”(здравомыслящий) and this is the key word of this part. For it is repeated several times “there wasno saner man”.” He had the marvelous(чудесный, дивный. удивительный) instinctive sanity” and it heightened(усиливается) by the epithet James criticized all his brothers even for their positive features(особенность) “the martyr(мученик) to crankiness(чудачество)Swithin”. “Nicolas the sufferer(страдалец) from ability(способность), Roger the victim(жертва) of enterprise(предприимчивость)”. There antithesis brings James to unexpected(неожиданный) conclusion that he would “more likely to live for ever”
