depict scenes from the Shakespeare tragedy, King Lear.
2. Make a copy of the King Lear text on page 4 for each student.
3. The activity involves students working together to reconstruct the text.
The collaborative
Writing works well if you can supply poster paper (from a flip chart, for
example) and marker pens.
Lesson plan
1. On the board, write the following:
King France
England
war
children
loyalty
Ask your students if they know anything about this objects and how they
connect with each other.
2. Show students the paintings for tragedy King Lear (see Preparation, materials
and equipment on page 2). Tell them that it depicts a scene from a tragedy written by
Shakespeare. Tell students that the story also involves the following:
throne
test
flattering answers
shelter
invasion
prison
fair
Put students into pairs and ask them to guess what the story is about.
3.
4.
Invite students to share their ideas. Have a vote to see who thinks the story will have a
happy ending and who thinks it will have a sad ending.
Use the text on page 4 to tell students the story of King Lear. Refer to the paintings as
you do so (see Preparation, materials and equipment on page 2).
5. Tell students that they are going to hear the story again. This time
they should make notes of words or phrases that are key to the story.
Read the story a second time.
6. Let students compare the words and phrases that they wrote.
7.
Tell students that they are going to reconstruct the story in their own
words.
Note that this can be done collaboratively:
• Put students into small groups.
• Ask students to work together to reconstruct the story of King Lear
• Students should compare their understanding of the story, decide how they are going to
organize ideas and events, and consider the most suitable grammar structures and discourse
devices to link them.
• If possible, give out flipchart paper and marker pens (see Preparation, materials and
equipment on page 2) for students to write their final texts on. 8. Ask students to stick their texts on the wall. Invite students to browse the gallery and read
each other’s texts.
9.
Give out copies of the King Lear text on page 4 and let students compare it with their
own.
Follow up 1
Give students any of the following tasks:
• Investigate the literary methods in the story.
• Write a story which explains how Lear brought up his daughters or married.
• Find out about artists who painted scenes from King Lear,
Follow up 2
Ask students to look over the King Lear text on page 4 and underline ten items (words, phrases,
expressions, idioms, structures, etc.) that they like. Once they have done this, ask them to write
their chosen items on the reverse side of the sheet in the same order that they appear in the story.
Finally, put students into pairs and ask them to recount the King Lear story to each other,
referring only to these ‘crib sheets’ that they have just created. Importantly, they should
incorporate all ten of their chosen language items into their stories.
Follow up 3
Refer students to the films adapted on the plot of King Lear for their own watching.
Text
King Lear
Lear the aging king of Britain, decides to step down from the throne and divide his kingdom
evenly among his three daughters. First, however, he puts his daughters through a test, asking
each to tell him how much she loves him. Goneril and Regan, Lear’s older daughters, give their
father flattering answers. But Cordelia, Lear’s youngest and favorite daughter, remains silent,
saying that she has no words to describe how much she loves her father. Lear flies into a rage
and disowns Cordelia. The king of France, who has courted Cordelia, says that he still wants to
marry her even without her land, and she accompanies him to France. Lear quickly learns that he
made a bad decision. Goneril and Regan, refuse to give their father a shelter in their places. Lear
slowly goes insane. A French army lands as part of an invasion led by Cordelia in an effort to
save her father. But they lost the battle. Lear and Cordelia were arrested, put in prison and
sentenced to a death by older Lear’s daughters. When they were released Cordelia was already
killed. Her father could not overcome it and followed his fair daughter.
