Big cities of Australia.
There are five big cities in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Each city is the capital of state in which it is situated. Sydney has about three million inhabitants, Melbourne has about two and half million, the other cities are much smaller.

Most of Australian population lives in the cities. So, Australia is mostly urban.
Less than one third of inhabitants lives outside city area. And still more people are moving away from rural areas.
There are five cities in Australia, which are capitals of the states in which they are.
These cities are Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.
Melbourne is the capital of Victoria State.
Sydney is the capital of New South Wales. It is the largest and one of the most well-known cities in Australia. It is often called “Paris of the Pacific”.
Adelaide is the capital of South Australia.
Brisbane is the capital of Queensland.
Perth is the capital of Western Australia.
There is a joke saying that there is a city in Australia, called Sydney, and all the rest
around is “the bush”. “The bush” for Australians is something opposite to town. “The
bush” is the natural countryside of Australia.
Sydney and Melbourne are the fourth and the fifth largest cities in the Southern Hemisphere. Sydney and Melbourne have more than three million inhabitants. Both of them are modern seaports.
Canberra is the capital city of the Commonwealth of Australia. It is the country’s largest inland city. Its population is more than 332,000 people.
Canberra is now the administrative and cultural centre of the country.
Previous capital of Australia was Melbourne. And the government moved to Canberra in 1927.

The name “Canberra” comes from the Aboriginal word “kamberra” meaning “meeting
place”.
There are a lot of trees and flowers in the city, so it got the name “bush capital”.
Perth is a city in Western Australia on the beautiful Swan River. The Perth Sunset Coast is famous for its safe swimming beaches, walking and cycling paths. There is a lot of sun in this place.
Brisbane is situated on the Brisbane River. Brisbane is famous for the Gold Coast (it is a string of seaside towns). It is about an hour drive from Brisbane and has perfect surf beaches and exciting theme parks.
Adelaide is the capital city of South Australia. South Australia is the “festival” state. And Adelaide is home to Australia’s leading festivals — the Adelaide Festival of Arts and the Fringe Festival. It also holds the national food and wine festival “Tasting Australia”. Adelaide is a city that has many churches.
Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory.
Hobart is the capital of Tasmania island.
Most of the factories are concentrated in or around the big cities. They produce goods for the motor-car, machine-building, clothing and food industries. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth are the country`s main ports.
