I. What does a healthy way of life mean? How do you look after your health?

People nowadays are more health-conscious than they used to be. They understand that good health is above wealth. To be healthy we should avoid different bad habits that can affect our health.

Smoking, and drinking too much alcohol, is the worst ones. It’s common knowledge that smoking and drinking can shorten our lives dramatically. Smoking, for example, causes a number of heart and lung diseases, such as pneumonia, emphysema and cancer. Besides, it makes your teeth yellow and skin unhealthy. Fortunately, in recent years smoking has received a lot of bad publicity, and fewer people smoke nowadays. Some companies don’t employ people who are smokers. Smoking has been banned in most public places because everyone agrees it does harm to our health. We don’t smoke, because we don’t want to have unhealthy skin and teeth and die young. Smoking and drinking are joined by less dangerous habits, such as skipping meals, eating unhealthy food, or even overeating. Of course, they are not quite as deadly as smoking or drinking alcohol, but they also affect our health.

If we eat too much, we’ll become obese, and obesity leads to serious health problems. A lot of people like drinking coca cola and coffee, and enjoy pizzas and hamburgers. But what is tasty is not always healthy. Fast food makes you fat that is why Americans are the fattest people in the world. In recent years eating habits have undergone a change. People are encouraged to eat less fat and more fiber. Fat is believed to be one of the major causes of obesity and heart disease. High fiber and low fat foods can now be found in all shops and supermarkets. Salads, beans, and fruit have taken the place of steak and ice cream.

The fashion for health food is growing all the time. Many people feel they are too fat, even if their doctors disagree. And a lot of people try to improve their fitness. There are a lot of ways to lose weight and avoid gaining it. Perhaps the most popular of them is following a diet. If you want to lose weight, you should cut out snacks and desserts, and cut down on fat. People have also become more aware of calories, the energy value of food. Some people count the number of calories they eat every day; so that they can try to take in fewer calories and lose weight. This is called a calorie-controlled diet. Manufacturers are increasingly producing special foods with fewer calories for slimmers. But excessive dieting may be dangerous, too. Some people refuse to eat meat as they consider it harmful. They say a vegetarian diet reduces the risk of cancer and vegetarians live longer than others. We believe, it’s wrong to put down a food simply because excessive amounts can cause health problems. Consumed in moderate amounts, meat is perfectly good for our health.

We believe, the only way to stay healthy and to keep fit is by going in for sports. Among the benefits of regular exercise are a healthier heart, stronger bones, quicker reaction times and more resistance to various illnesses. Besides, you can eat and drink as much as you want because you are burning it all off. To be healthy, it is also very important to spend a lot of time in the open air. It is useful to go for a walk before going to bed, or to air the room.

II. Healthy Life.

2.1. Nutrition and Health.

When we speak about bad habits we usually think about alcoholism, smoking, drug addiction. But the list of bad habits and harmful behaviors is much longer than one may imagine. People  have such unhealthy addictions as overeating, eating junk food and fast food, snacking at the TV or a computer, late suppers etc. Each habit belonging to this category is harmful in its own way. For example, meals from fast food restaurants contain much fat, sugar and carcinogenic substances from frying oil. Eating such food leads to overweighing, problems with stomach and intestines and even more serious diseases.

As to junk food, it contains many flavors and flavor enhancers, preservatives and other chemical additives. Eating your favourite chips, salty snacks crackers, chocolates or candies, you get nothing good but a lot of calories. Moreover, after the long-term use of such products you begin to lose your taste. Healthy meals begin to seem tasteless, and you go to buy “chemical” food again and again. As a result, you may get an ulcer and other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, immunity disorders, general malaise and other health problems up to cancer.

We must remember that eating healthy food is very important, especially for the growing organism. Dairy products, crops, vegetables and fruit, fresh juices, boiled meat and fish give us vitamins, necessary proteins, fats, carbohydrates and important minerals. Healthy diet combined with sports will make us strong and beautiful, and provide enough energy to study well and do our favorite things.

Рисунок 2

Eating the proper food is important to stay healthy. People need vitamins to stay in a good form. “Vita” means life in Latin. People get vitamins from the food they eat. There a lot of vitamins in fruit and vegetables. But you can hardly find any useful vitamins in Coke, chips and other fast food. Each vitamin is responsible for different things in the human body. There are about ten major vitamins. They are usually named by a letter of the alphabet (A, B, C, D).

·                     Vitamin A is in green and yellow vegetables, milk and eggs. It’s necessary for seeing in the dark.

·                     Vitamin B1 is in meat, porridge and bread. Bis responsible for the nervous system. Lack of this vitamin leads to serious illnesses and even death.

·                     Vitamin C is in every fruit and vegetable. You can find this vitamin in black currants, strawberries, oranges and grapefruits, onions, cabbages and green peppers. Vitamin C is important for building bones and teeth. It helps to prevent colds.

·                     Vitamin D is in eggs. People can also get it from sunlight. It makes our bones strong.

·                     Vitamin E is necessary for skin and body. It’s in wheat and nuts.

Vitamin Band K are necessary for human blood. You can find Bin beans and milk; K – in potatoes and carrots.

2.2. Habit is a second nature.

We all have habits, good or bad. Unfortunately, many people have bad habits which mainly cause serious health problems. The most common habits are smoking, drinking alcohol and using drugs. They usually come out as a result of some stress, anger or boredom. Some teenagers start smoking because they believe that it’s cool. Bad habits are dangerous and expensive. What is more, for many people they are addictive. It means that it’ll be very hard to quit them once you have started.

Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs can ruin someone’s life. For example, smoking damages lungs and causes cancer. By the way it is the number one killer in many countries today. About 90% of lung cancer patients developed their disease because of smoking. Chain smokers are also susceptible to heart diseases and strokes. Passive smoking is very harmful for surrounding people as well, especially for children and pregnant women. As for drinking alcohol, it can ruin your liver and kidney.  Besides, very drunk people and drug addicts become aggressive and violent. They can easily commit a crime under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drunk driving is the main reason for car accident deaths in our world. Most bad habits have a great impact on people’s social life and their jobs.

Breaking the bad habits is the hardest thing to do. So it’s better not to start or try them at all. Scientists and doctors state that the way you treat your body in the first half of your life will affect how healthy you are in the second half of it. That’s why we should have only good and healthy habits. Our world would be a better place without cigarettes and drugs.

Do you know that 16th of November is the day when people all over the world quit smoking?

Do you know that every year 3 million people die of smoking?

Do you know that your life is 25% shorter if you smoke?

Do you know that only 13% of the population smoke in the USA, but in Russia – more than 76%? 400,000 people die in Russia every year as a result of smoking. Imagine that a whole town like Ufa disappears every year.

Some teenagers start smoking because they believe that it’s cool. Bad habits are dangerous and expensive. What is more, for many people they are addictive. It means that it’ll be very hard to quit them.

Nowadays, young people are addicted to electronic cigarettes and hookahs.

We had made the analysis of this exploration and came up to the conclusion: 75% of men and 30% of women are subjected to smoking.

·                     20% of men and 67% of women smoke 1-10 cigarettes a day;

·                     73.3% of men and 33.3% of women smoke 10-20 cigarettes a day;

·                     6.7% of men and 0% of women smoke more than 1 pack of cigarettes a day;

Each of the respondents answered that the main negative consequence of smoking is lack of money.

2.3. Sport as a Lifestyle.

Good health is better than the best medicine. “You have a sound mind in a sound body” as the old Latin saying goes.

The English proverb “Sickness in the body brings sickness to the mind” expresses a similar idea but from different point of view. All kinds of physical exercises are very useful to make our bodies strong and to keep ourselves fit and healthy. Doing sports a man become strong, healthy and gay. He begins to take care of his health.

To keep fit most people do sports. Some of them join a sports club. The most popular individual sports are walking, swimming, cycling and aerobics.

People work hard. They come home late and are busy at weekends. They have no time to go to a sports club or sports centre which isn’t quite near their homes. They can hardly do sport seriously. They just want to relax.

People of all ages and types do exercises at home to improve their health and to keep fit. On the one hand, everyone should think about a healthy way of life… But on the other hand – getting up early at the weekend? Never! And what about swimming? What real pleasure is there in the pool? Instead of swimming or jogging you could go on a cycling tour. This kind of sport also does people a lot of good, and the morning air smells wonderful.

2.4. Rest, dreams and good emotions

Another group of harmful behaviors typical for students includes such violations of the correct daily mode as going to bed late, watching TV and playing computer games for hours.

Such activities take a lot of our time which could be spent on studies, hobbies, sports and a good rest. As a result, lovers of watching TV, surfing in the Internet or playing computer games begin to find it getting up in the morning very difficult. They experience difficulties with their studies and feel constant weariness. Their relationship with parents, teachers and friends get worse and often escalate into conflicts.

Long hours of sitting in front of the monitors damage our eyesight and spoil the posture. And, it is not a secret to anybody, that playing computer games may cause a strong addiction. Except problems with physical health, gamers are exposed to a variety of mental disorders.

Their memory and intellectual abilities worsen; they experience difficulties in communication and are not interested in the real life. The neglected cases often require the intervention of a specialist. To combat these problems and a lot of other ones we must choose a correct time management strategy.

When body lacks the rest and the sleep, it cannot recharge itself properly. As a result our body becomes tired and jaded and it really lacks the energy for doing its routine works. But there’s more to it; we need rest or our body needs rest for many other reasons as well.

Rest is useful in reducing the stress and anxiety. Because when we take rest, both physically and mentally, we remain away from the stressful situation. It allows body to calm down and gather some energy as well.

So, rest is extremely important for the mental calmness and physical energy  As we know lack of rest, relaxation and sleep lead to many problems such as moodiness, confusion, impulsivity, weak body and of course lack of energy. Doctors recommend people to sleep 7-8 hours a night. Before going to bed we should put our Smartphones away and try to relax reading a book, or drinking a cup of warm milk. Sleeping enough, getting up early, regular meals, a healthy diet ,going in for sports and ,of course, smiling   is really a good way to live.

Conclusion.

“Good health is above wealth”

It’s obvious that our health depends on our way of life. That means we must take care of our health. The saying “Health is wealth” is true. Those who want to be healthy must try hard. If we are healthy, we may solve different problems. On the other hand, if we are unhealthy, we won’t be pleased with life.

To be healthy people do different things. Many people go for a healthy diet. They eat a lot of fruit and vegetables because there are plenty of vitamins in them.

But not only healthy food is important. Sport makes people healthy, keeps them fit, more organized and better disciplined. Some people go in for sport for their health. But there are people who don`t enjoy doing sport. They like sport too, but prefer only watch sports games, listen to sports news, read interesting stories about sportsmen. Many men and women are overweight. Such kind of people also want to be healthy.

Actually, physical exercises are better than obesity, smoking and drinking. Smoking should be banned in all public places. To keep fit some people do aerobics or yoga, others prefer some kind of weight training in a gym. A healthy body becomes a fashion, an ideal of life today.

We need to plan our rest very carefully. Adequate sleep and adequate rest we do need for healthy body and mind. Therefore, being healthy or healthy living is not all about healthy diet and exercise; it’s also about adequate rest. A combination of healthy diet, a good exercise regime and proper rest and relaxation can certainly help to live a happy and healthy life.

Finally, we want  to remind all people the proverb: To rise at five, dine at nine, sup at five, go to bed at nine makes a man live to ninety-nine.

Health effects of smoking among young people

·                     Among young people, the short-term health consequences of smoking include respiratory and non respiratory effects, addiction to nicotine, and the associated risk of other drug use. Long-term health consequences of youth smoking are reinforced by the fact that most young people who smoke regularly continue to smoke throughout adulthood.(1) Cigarette smokers have a lower level of lung function than those persons who have never smoked.(1) Smoking reduces the rate of lung growth.(1)

·                     In adults, cigarette smoking causes heart disease and stroke. Studies have shown that early signs of these diseases can be found in adolescents who smoke.(1)

·                     Smoking hurts young people's physical fitness in terms of both performance and endurance—even among young people trained in competitive running.(1) On average, someone who smokes a pack or more of cigarettes each day lives 7 years less than someone who never smoked.(2)

·                     The resting heart rates of young adult smokers are two to three beats per minute faster than nonsmokers.(1)

·                     Smoking at an early age increases the risk of lung cancer. For most smoking-related cancers, the risk rises as the individual continues to smoke.(1)

·                     Teenage smokers suffer from shortness of breath almost three times as often as teens who don't smoke, and produce phlegm more than twice as often as teens who don't smoke.(3)

·                     Teenage smokers are more likely to have seen a doctor or other health professionals for an emotional or psychological complaint.(3)

·                     Teens who smoke are three times more likely than nonsmokers to use alcohol, eight times more likely to use marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine. Smoking is associated with a host of other risky behaviors, such as fighting
