     A FLOWER

 

Five hundred years ago a young girl lived in a small Indian town in the mountains. Her name was Devi. Her family lived in a house with a big garden. Sometimes Devi and her friends had picnics or played games there. Some­times she sat and read books under the trees. There were some beautiful trees in the garden, but one was Devi's favourite  tree. It was the tallest and the most beautiful tree. It had big green leaves. Devi looked at the birds and listened to the wind in her tree. But there were never flowers in it. Every year Devi waited for a flower. All the trees had flowers, but Devi's tree didn't have flowers. The girl was very unhappy.

Devi lived in the same house for eighty years. She be­came an old woman. Every evening she went to the gar­den to see her tree. Every evening she looked for a flower.

One evening on her birthday she came to the tree and saw one beautiful red and yellow flower. No flower in the garden was more beautiful than Devi's flower. She smiled. She was very happy. Devi got the best birthday present in her life. She went back to the house. The door closed. Devi didn't come to the garden again.

Turtle was a very good singer. His songs were so good that all the animals in the forest danced. But Turtle was not happy. He looked at his friend Bird and said, "I do not want to sing. I want to be a beautiful bird." Bird said, "Your songs are very beautiful." "No, no," said Turtle.

"I must get some feathers (перья) and wear them. Then I shall be beautiful. "Bird laughed (засмеялась) and said, "Take four of my feathers. My friends will give you some feathers, too."

Many of Bird's friends came with their feathers. The feathers were red, yellow, blue, and green. That morning Turtle walked in the forest. He was very beautiful. "A man is in the forest. Run and hide (спрячься), Turtle," said Bird. Turtle ran to a tree. "I'll hide here," he thought. "He will see your clothes,” said his friend. Turtle ran to a big rock (камню). "No, he will see you." The man saw Turtle. He took him. "Oh, so many colours," said the man. "But under the feathers I see a turtle. I'll have it for breakfast." Turtle cried, "This is my end. I cannot run, Bird." "You can sing. You can sing. Sing!" said Bird.

Turtle sang. The man began to dance. He danced and danced. He stopped when he was near his house. Turtle said, "I don't like my clothes. I shall sing!" Turtle took off the feathers and sang. All the animals danced and danced. Turtle was very happy.
