Teacher: Ecology is a science which studies the relationship between all forms of life on our planet. This word came from Greek which means home. The idea of home includes our planet, population, Nature, animals, birds, fish, insects, atmosphere of our planet. For thousands of years people lived in harmony with environment. Until now pollution was not a serious problem. And now pollution is one of the most important problems now.
(слайд)The Earth has enough for every man’s need, but not for man’s greed.
Nature pardons no errors. These are the epigraphs of our lesson.
(слайд) Aim
How great is the problem of environmental pollution?
Tasks:

Prepare the reading and translation the text
After finishing working with text, give your opinions how to prevent water pollution.
Water pollution
Water is necessary for life. All organisms contain it, some drink it and some live in it.The pollution of air and the world’s ocean is a sign of the ecological crises.Water pollution kills a lot of fish, birds and other animals.Water pollution is very serious too. Pollution makes rivers, lakes, coastal waters no good to swim or to have a rest.Dirty rivers and waters polluted with factory waste, poisoned fish.Polluted air and poisoned water lead to the end of the civilization. A lot of dead lands appeared. One of the most important environmental problems today is the shortage of clean water.Only 3 per cent of water on the planet is fresh water. Rivers, lakes and seas became poisonous. Thousands of fish die every year. Polluted air and water affect people’s health. This is the result of human activities: chemicals, car fumes, litter, oil spills.2 billion people in the world lack to safe drinking water.73 kinds of pesticides have been found in the groundwater that we drink.Pollutants can be separated into several classes.
The first class.Petroleum products: oil, fuel, plastics. The petroleum products get into water by spills from ships, tanker trucks.
The second class. Pesticides. There are chemicals used to kill harmful animals and plants.
The third class. Heavy metals ( mercury, selenium, uranium, radium). They get into the water from industries, automobile exhausts, mines, soil.
The fourth class.Fertilizers used to promote plant growth on farms and gardens.
The fifth class. Infectious organisms. They enter water through storm drains.
Вопросно – ответная работа по тексту.

(слайд) Teacher. Now look at this slide and identify the activities that are harmful to the environment in the image below.
Students: water trash (garbage), spills, sewage system, chemicals, factories, waste, radiation, noise pollution, car fumes, aerosol sprays, deforestation.

Teacher. Fill in the gaps with the words derived from the words in brackets.
There are many problems which threaten our natural environment. Acid rain, (1)… (globe) warming and air and water (2)… (pollute) are among the most serious ones. There are several ways to help improve the situation. Firstly, we should encourage (3)… (recycle) because it is the (4)… (produce) of new materials which causes the most damage. We must learn to reuse things like plastic bags and glass jars. Secondly, driving an environmentally-friendly car is also (5) … (help). Joining an (6)… (organize) which plants trees or cleans up beaches would be a (7) … (prove) that you are really (8)… (concern) about the environment. Lastly, supporting groups such as Greenpeace, which try to prevent many (9)… (environment) disasters, would help to ensure that our planet will be clean and safe for the future generations.
