Good afternoon! Sit down, please. Today we’ll have an unusual lesson because there are many guests in our classroom. I hope you won’t be shy and work like you always do.

(слайд 1)  We are going on to work at the topic “Schooldays & Work”. But before we start I want you to look at the blackboard and remember as many part-time jobs as you can (слайд 2) (pizza delivery boy, shop assistant,  car cleaner, computer operator, mail delivery boy, waiter/waitress, dish washer,  promoter, children leader). Thank you.

Which of you have already had some experience in working? What factors are important for you when they are choosing a job? Where do you usually get information about it? (newspapers, recommendation from friends, the Internet) Have you ever emailed a job information centre before?

What do you think the theme of our lesson is? Do you know how these letters are called? These letters are called Applications letters. (слайд 3) But before we write them, we are going to go through some of the rules of email writing. So what are our aims? ( to recognize the distinctive features of formal language, to know the main writing strategies for creating formal messages and study the specific features of business letter style, to understand the general principles of designing a business letter and know the main rules of writing its parts).

(слайд 4) We have already said that we could find the information about a job in newspapers or in the Internet. Look at the advert. Would you like to have such a job?

(слайд 5) Two teens Bob Green and Helen King read this advert too. They sent their letters to a prospective employer. What style of writing should they have used? (The answer is formal). What characteristics of formal style do we know? Work in groups to discuss. I’ll give you 1 minute. Take you self-appraisal lists and write down your result.

These are two letter, written by Helen and Bob, cut into stripes. You should group them and put the strips into the right order.

We are going to focus on the formal email because emailing has become the main means of communication and so it is important to know the conventions of this style of writing. Whose letter was good emailing and whose was bad? Give examples. (слайд 6)

I’ve drawn you two columns on a piece of paper and written the headings Dos and Don’ts at the top. (The students then compare the two emails and try to discover the rules of writing a good email. They should write the rules in the correct column). Which rules have you discovered? (слайд 7) Check and write down your result.

You have read in letters that Bob and Helen enclosed copies of their CVs. (слайд 8) Look at the CV below and complete the headings A-D with: EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE, PERSONAL DETAILS, PERSONAL QUALITIES. Then fill in gaps 1-5 with information from the letter. Let’s check it up. Write down your result.

Let’s read Helen’s letter again and try to identify the elements of the letter (cлайд 9) Write down your result.

You have another advert on your papers. Before you start doing your homework let’s think about the advice for writing a letter of application. Work in group. Write down your results.

At the end I’ve prepared you a short test. Read the sentences and mark them True or False.
