By the end of the lesson my students will be able to:
To get information about the celebration of Christmas in Great Britain and in Russia

to practice reading for specific information (1.3)
to practice reading for the main idea

And now let us discuss if all people celebrate Christmas in different countries. Last we
discussed about New Year in Great Britain. Answer my questions!
T. What do you think are Christmas and New Year the same holidays?
P. No, they are not!
T. When do the Russians celebrate Christmas?
P. The Russians celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January.
T. When do the Russians celebrate New Year?
P. They celebrate New Year on the 1st of January.
T. And what about Great Britain? When do the British celebrate Christmas?
P. They celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.
T. And what about the New Year? When do the British celebrate New Year? How do
they celebrate it?
P. When New Year’s holiday comes some people ignore it completely. Others,
however do celebrate it one way another.
T. Thanks a lot! Very good, but today the topic of our lesson is celebrate or not to
celebrate. Let us try to understand is it necessary to celebrate these holidays.
PRELISTENIG: Here you can a boy. His name is Phil. And here you can see some
questions. Read them and try to answer. Try to guess the answers!
1st: What makes Phil dislike Xmas?
P1 It’s boring for him. Every Christmas makes him to think about gifts.
2nd: What do his parents think about celebrations?
P2 His parents like celebrations.
3d: What does he suggest instead of celebrating?
P3 He likes to play football and other summer sports.

5. Reading.
Have a look at the ex.1, part 3. There you can see the dialogue. And look at the picture.
You can see two boys. One of them is Rashid. He is Muslim.
PREREADING Try to answer the questions by yourselves.
1st Why does Rashid never celebrate Xmas?
P1 Because he is Muslim boy.
2nd What does Rashid think of celebrations?
P2 He likes celebrations. But as for me I suppose that he can’t celebrate Christmas.
3d Do you think he believes in God?
P3 I think he doesn’t
4th Has he got any religious prejudices?
P4 Yes, he has got

POSTREADING Answer the questions using the dialogue.
P1 Rashid’s religion doesn’t allow him to celebrate Christmas.
P2 He wants to celebrate any holidays irrespective of its religious background.
P3 I think he doesn’t believe in God. T: Why? P Because he is Muslim. P4 Yes, he has. His religion doesn’t allow him to celebrate Christmas, because
Christmas is the Christian holiday.
6. Well, thank you! But let’s return to Phil. He doesn’t like to celebrate Christmas (he
doesn’t like to celebrate any holidays in general.
And Rashid, he doesn’t celebrate Christmas, because he and his family are Muslim. Their
religion doesn’t allow them to celebrate Christmas.
Look at the ex.2 at p.95. The main character of the text is Tanya. Scan the text and
answer only two questions.
1. What does Tanya think about celebrations?
2. Does she celebrate Christmas?
3. Do you remember Phil? You know that he hates celebrations. Tanya Likes them. Do
you agree with Phil or Tanya?
Answers: 1st She likes celebrating. (T. Why?) Because the guests give her some
presents.
2nd Yes, she does. 3dI agree with Tanya. I think it is great! Because it is
funny, beautiful.
I give you 2 minutes.
And now do you understand the text. I hope you do. Well make a little conclusion 1st text is
about personal attitude of celebration, 2nd is about Muslim people their religion doesn’t allow
them to celebrate Xmas. Tanya likes celebrating. And what about you, do you like celebrating?
