Near the King’s Palace there is a small church. Every day, the people of Rome, young and old, rich and poor, secretly go to the church to listen to the Christian priest Valentine. And every day, more and more people become Christians. Just under the King’s nose!
One day Claudius learns about it. “ Off with his head!” he says. And Valentine is put in prison. In prison, he falls in love with his guard’s blind daughter. Valentine’s love is so strong that it cures the girl’s blindness.
Valentine knows that on the 14th of February he will die. Early in the morning he sends the guard’s daughter a letter. He signs it “From your Valentine”.

Orpheus and Eurydice
Orpheus is a musician. He plays the lyre and sings so beautifully that everybody likes his music – people, gods and even animals and plants.
One day Orpheus meets a beautiful nymph, Eurydice. He falls in love with her and she falls in love with him. They get married and are very happy.
One day Eurydice goes for a walk in the forest. Suddenly she steps on a snake and dies.
Orpheus is very unhappy. He can’t eat. He can’t drink. He can’t sleep. “I must go to the underworld and ask hades to bring her back”, he says. So Orpheus takes his lyre and goes to the underworld.
When hades hears his beautiful music, his gold heart melts.
“You can take your wife back”, he says. “But promise not to look back at her until you come home”.
“I promise”, Orpheus says.
So Orpheus and Eurydice slowly walk home. But Orpheus forgets his promise and looks back at his sweetheart……..
Eurydice disappears for ever.
X. The teams read in turn poems devoted to the holiday.
1. My Valentine has eyes of green
With 20 eyebrows in between.
Her skin is blue.
Her head is square.
She hasn’t got a brain in there.
Her 4 ears twitch
Her noses shine.
But still, I think
I’ll make her mine!
2. I love you. I love you.
I love you divine.
Please give me your bubble gum,
You are sitting on mine.
3. Here’s a Valentine
And this is what it’s for –
To say that every day
You are loved
More and more and more!
4. I’ll be your sweetheart,
If you will be mine.
All of my life
I’ll be your Valentine.
5. I loved my friend,
He went away from me.
There’s nothing more to say.
The poem ends,
Soft as it began –
I loved my friend.
6. My love is like a cabbage,
Divided into two,
The leaves I give to others,
But the heart I give to you.
7. The rose is red,
The violets are blue.
The honey’s sweet
And so you are.
8. If you will be my Valentine,
My charming little dear,
The sun can never help but shine
Throughout the coming year.
If you will be my Valentine,
You’ll see in all your walks
Fresh lemon drops on every twig
And peanuts on stalks.
But if from you I never hear,
Nor even get a line,
I’ll ask some other nicer girl
To be my Valentine.
9. I hope that Valentine’s Day
Will bring you lots of fun!
He thinks you’re extra-specially nice,
And so does everyone!
10.You’d make the nicest Valentine
That there could ever be!
And so I’m asking:
“Pretty, please, be Valentine with me?”
XI. The teams in turn say what people get many cards on St. Valentine’s Day, what character should these people have.
XII. The teams sing a song “My bonnie”.
3.Last night when I lay on the pillow,
Last night when I lay on the bed,
Last night when I lay on the pillow,
I dreamed that my bonnie was dead.
4. The winds have blown over the ocean,
The winds have blown over the sea,
The winds have blown over the ocean,
And brought back my bonnie to me.
Refrain: Bring back, bring back,
Oh, bring back my bonnie to me, to me.
Bring back, bring back,
Oh, bring back my bonnie to me.
