When we talk about childhood infectious diseases we can ask a lot of questions:

·         How to protect kids from the cradle to the mosh pit?

·         Which infectious diseases pose the greatest danger to a child during pregnancy, in infancy and adolescence?

·         Most of us are aware of the dangers of whooping cough and influenza, but what about little-known and disabling micro-organisms such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and old-nasties that re-emerge periodically like measles?

·         What does every parent need to know about these infectious diseases?

·         What role do family members play in passing on infections to children? How can vaccines offer protection against childhood and adolescent infections?

There is an interview with Professor Cheryl Jones, Paediatrics and Child Health expert, University of Sydney, Paediatric Infectious Diseases Head, Sydney Children’s Hospital Network:

“Childhood infections are no longer a common cause of deaths in children but they're a really important problem. They're one of the commonest reasons parents take their children to see the doctor.

We're very lucky that we have vaccines against a number of the very serious childhood infectious diseases. These include things that people would be aware of perhaps not see anymore such as measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, bacteria that cause brain infections such as the meningococcal or pneumococcus, things that cause whooping cough, the pertussis and other important bacteria such as the haemophilus influenza.

What can people do to protect their families?

Clearly keeping up to date with immunizations is very important. But there's also some other things even from a very careful hand hygiene to cliffy changing nappies, getting yourself humanized particularly as a pregnant woman against influenza or the whooping cough, being very careful with how you manage your food, cooking your food, washing your vegetables. But also there should be careful consideration to sickness context. Advise your friends or relatives if there are well not to come and visit through that time.

I love doing research because I still have many questions about childhood infections that I want to answer. Already our research has uncovered some very important findings. This has led to new diagnostic guidelines. In the future we hope to develop some new vaccines and other public health measures that will stop infections getting transmitted and causing disability.
