HOW TO KEEP A REFLECTIVE JOURNAL

Writing a reflective journal is a method often used to aid the learning process in nursing. The reflective journal nursing students keep helps integrate theory learned in the classroom with practice-based training. Rather than the dry non-personal clinical approach that is used so often, reflective journaling for nursing students is more personal and focuses more on the learning process itself. Reflective journaling for nursing students is a valuable learning tool but one that not all students are familiar with. Read the tips and see a nurse’s reflective journal example.

  • Personal self-awareness: It allows you to examine your interactions in different situations
  • Descriptive skills: Reflective journals for students of nursing improve their skills in observation and recollection as well as improving the ability to record thoughts and experiences in writing
  • Critical thinking: Using reflective writing helps promote deeper thinking and analysis of experiences.
  • Synthesis: One of the objectives of writing reflective journals is for nursing students to integrate the knowledge they have currently with the new knowledge they are being taught. Ultimately the blending of the existing and the new makes for better nurses overall. Reflective journals describe what was observed and what was done but the focus is on your thoughts and reaction to experiences than on the subject material.

Tips and Suggestions on Reflective Journaling for Nursing Students

Reflective journal writing for those who plan on becoming a nurse also has a particular structure and rules of writing, like any other type of reflective journals, however, the overall formatting rules and regulations are more liberal, as you can see in the given example. There aren’t too many hard and fast rules when it comes to writing a nursing reflective journal. It is important to the reflection writing process that thoughts be allowed to flow freely. Here are some tips and suggestions for writing reflective journals that nursing students should keep in mind:

  • When writing for just you don’t worry about reflective journal structure and other narrative constraints.
  • If you are just beginning to write a reflective journal, keep a regular schedule at first.
  • Select learning objectives as nursing reflective journal topics
  • Don’t use the names of patients in your reflective journal. Even if you never intend for another person to see your journal and you keep it secure, a patient’s real name should never be used.

Writing schedule. Once you get in the habit of recording entries a regular schedule won’t be necessary.  As long as you understand what you have written and can understand it if you review it a month or two after you wrote it then write what you feel.

Evaluation skills. Reflective journals help improve your evaluation skills to better determine what areas that you are strong in and pinpoint those areas where you are weak and need improvement in. Sometimes you may feel like there is nothing important for you to write about. Sit down and write anything.

An example of a nurse’s reflective journal

I was a young nurse. I was 25 years old, and I worked for four months at the Intensive Care Department at the Neurology Clinic. Everything was still nes and difficult for me. Before that I worked for three years in Germany, in a private clinic in a completely different type of work, on the organization of the patient admission and discharge. One day in the Intensive Unitwe received an elderly gentlman, in a difficult state. The reception was from the Emergency Department, and nobody was accompanying the patient. He was 70 years old. No one asked for him, there were no data, he was left alone.

He was semi-conscious, and he constantly asked his mother. Whenever I get close to his bed, I heard him say, ‘Mom, Mom’. I was so moved that I came to him at some point and said, ‘I’m your mom, and you are my bird’. I started to carefully tale care of him. I would bring some clothes from home. He had, for example, cold feet and I was putting him socks. I bonded with him more than with other patients. I was very sad that he was alone and there was no one. At that time, I promised myself that I would especially protect such ones. There were even more difficult moments of coping with death, and young people. I recall them and remember them all by their name. All of them influenced me to become a better, more responsible person, and look differently on life. When I became the head nurse of the hospital in 1991, I no longer had such an affair with patients, but I often came to the Intensive Unit, I could not separate myself from the Intensive. I had to see people. And now I like to come, I’m always stressful, and again from the beginning I admire the people who work in all our Intensive Units, so shaky and responsible work. I think the sisters are underpaid for what they do. And after so many years I can only say that nurses and technicians working in Intensive Units can work anywhere.
