The main features of the British and the Russian character.
Goal:
To identify the national characteristics of the British and the Russian people.

Tasks:
To give definition of the British nation.
To study and organize information, documentary and journalistic literature on the subject.
To do generalizations of the main features of the national character, manners and behaviour of the British and the Russian people.
To point out differences and similarities of the British and Russians.
To make up the presentation on the topic having selected information, photos, pictures.

The British are the people, the main population of Britain, as well as the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man and the British Overseas Territories and their descendants. The British as a nation were formed in the Middle Ages on the British Isles from the

people living on the territory of the present United Kingdom. Nowadays, there are over 65 million British. Most of them live in the United Kingdom. The British diaspora, which includes citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa, is about 140 million people.

The British are polite people even if they don’t know you. The British are keen on being polite. Asking them for something, you should remember such special words as “could you please”, “don’t you mind” and so on.

They always help foreigners find the way to where they’re going; shopkeepers are always friendly too. British people always say “Sorry”.

The English are famous for being reserved. Some believe that they are cold, insensitive people. The English restrain,

the desire to hide emotions, save face is the consequence of strict upbringing. They don’t show their emotions even in tragic situations. Also, the British have a negative attitude towards the emotional emancipation of other people, but self-control and patience don`t allow them to express discontent.

In England, it is believed that raising a child should be strict and the excessive manifestation of love and affection causes irreparable harm to the child. This forces parents to control their feelings and get used to it, and children from an early age take over their penchant for discipline.

British people won’t invite you to their home until they know you fairy well. The most you can expect is an invitation to drinks, lunch or dinner in a pub or
restaurant.

There are two English passions-football and queuing. Almost each Englishman, young or old, has his favorite football team.

Some time ago, people thought that English fans were aggressive and dangerous. These days, the situation has changed. Aggressive fans have to pay fines and are not allowed to come to matches.

Many other nationalities think that English people have no sense of humor. This is far from the trust. Their sense of humor is just of a different kind. It is based on irony. However, when English people make jokes about their own country, its weather, food or anything else-don’t join it. Most English people don’t like criticism of their country by other nationalities.
