Questions and problems
Question 1:
a. Write and explain the ideal gas equation in words.
b. One mole of an ideal gas is trapped inside a rigid container of volume 0.020 m3. Calculate the pressure exerted by the gas when the temperature within the container is 293 K.
Question 2:
a. An ideal gas is trapped in a cylinder at a pressure of 640 Pa and 23 degrees Celsius. The cylinder is heated to 48 degrees C. What is the final pressure of the heated gas? What assumptions are you making in your calculations? Explain your answers.
b. A fire extinguisher has a pressure of 92.3 kPa at 27 degrees C. It’s frozen to -73.1 degrees C due to harsh winter conditions where it’s kept. Find the pressure in the fire extinguisher once frozen and explain what you predict will happen if there is a fire. Can the extinguisher be used? Explain your answer.
