There are subtle differences in the style of clothing of different regions of 21st century Britain. Some draw a line between the women's fashion of the north and the south, but such a generalization is usually erroneous, although in Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle, they say they dress more elegantly, with more chic than in London and in the south of the country, where the casual style of women's fashion prevails. As for the traditional costume, everything is much simpler here: there are certain customs that must be observed.

Scotland
The national costume - kilt, vest, sporran (a small, fur-trimmed leather purse that is hung on the belt) and shoes with metal buckles - the Scots wear on all kinds of holidays and ceremonies. A modest plaid cape (which originated two hundred years ago from a medieval kilt, the upper free part of which was thrown over the shoulder and secured with a brooch) often flashes on the podium. For example, Vivienne Westwood included it in her collection "Anglomania" (Anglomania, 1993), which features mini kilts. The Lochcarron textile factory in Scotland has developed a special Macan Dreas tartan for Westwood, which was named after her third husband. The military regulations state that the kilt should be worn without underwear.


Wales
The Welsh national costume is in some way a fake. It was developed in the 19th century, at the initiative of Lady Llanover, who feared - and with good reason - that Welsh culture was on the verge of extinction. Created on the basis of rural women's attire of that time, it consists of a flannel petticoat, which is worn under open-top clothes, an apron, a red shawl and a headdress - a scarf or hat. The tall "chimney sweep's hat" appeared later, in the 1840s. The national costume of the Welsh is worn only on the occasion of festive public events; They don't go to the supermarket in it. The custom of carrying a child in a shawl is a native Welsh tradition.

England
The British, on the contrary, do not have a national costume — neither native, nor fake, no, but there is a recognizable English uniform. These are, for example, the Beefeaters costume (literally, "meat eaters") - a scarlet doublet embroidered with gold, stockings and a black round hat with a brim - worn by the guards of the Tower of London (and worn by an English participant in the Miss World beauty contest); red tunics and caps made of bear skins of the Royal Guards infantry; white shirts and knee-length breeches of Morris dance performers.

Native Englishmen wear bowler hats and suits, unlike in Wales and Scotland, but this is a very unusual phenomenon in modern days. A lot of the ordinary clothes we wear today have a long tradition, the British say. Very cold winters in the Crimea in the war of 1853-56 gave the names cardigan and Balaclava. Lord Cardigan handed over to the light cavalry at the Battle of Balaclava (1854) the "jumper" now warm woolen coats look short and have buttons, as well as "Sevastopol" called woolen hats.

Irish
The Irish national costume is one of those traditional variants of national dress that causes a lot of controversy and doubt. In fact, such a garment has not existed for about 300 years – this is history. In the modern world, it can only be found in various theatrical performances and as decorations for dancers performing folk dances.

Now it is a more modern garment, typical of the general European style: plain kilt skirt (most often the skirt was made of orange fabrics); white or light shirt without collar; a warm loose or baggy sweater; an elongated jacket or jacket made of thick fabric; a large cloth beret. At the same time, it is worth noting the fact that in Irish clothing, which has gone down in history as a national costume, the predominance of bright green is characteristic.
