Princess Olga is the first woman-ruler who had made a huge contribution to the development of ancient Rus. She was born in a period of time from 885 till 895. And she was died in 969. One of the legends says that she was born in the village Vybuty of Pskov land in the princess family Izborsk. Princess Olga was a very beautiful woman and at the same time she was a wise and very strict ruler.

That’s why she led the foreign policy not by bloodshed but with diplomacy. She successfully held reforms of great importance concerning the formation of the ancient state. Olga set the size of the tribute, established the village churchyards.
One of such village churchyards was Olga’s cross. It is situated in 185 km from Saint Petersburg and in 40 km from Gdov on the river Narova. It was the place with thick forests. And there were a lot of wild animals and different birds there. Princess Olga and her bodyguard came there from Pskov to hunt and to collect the tribute.

One of the legends says that when she was crossing the river she hardly escaped her death. In memory of her saving she planted a cross there. Nearly in 1570 the church was built there. And in 1887 the annex of new church was made in order to saint Princess Olga.

During the World War II the church was blown up. And only in 1998 the huge metal cross was installed there.
