Sister cities  Twin towns or sister form of cities are a social agreement between towns or cities to promote cultural and commercial ties.

The World Federation of United Cities             In  1957,  representatives  of  the  Twin  cities  have  created  the  World  Federation of United Cities (WFUC).           World United Cities Day Last  Sunday  of  April  is  a World  United  Cities Day.  This holiday was introduced by the WFUC  in Paris in 1963. In  2016  this  holiday  will  be  celebrated  on  the 29th of April. Now there are more than 7000 twin cities in  the world.

Kostroma and Durham are Twin Cities The international partnership between Durham County  Council and the Kostroma region was established in 1968. in  the  • Partnership  field  of  education started in 1997. The group  of  teachers  from  County  Durham  visited Kostroma for the first time. then  • Since  the  exchange  of  teachers`  delegations  between  our  cities are arranged annually. Our English Friends in Kostroma Durham County Council's  international office  arranges  visits by  teachers and retired teachers to  Kostroma. They work with the Teachers'  Training Institute and with young  learners of English in our town. During their stay, they visit  schools, help Russian teachers with  English classes and also give lessons. Our  Head  of  Administration  Victor  Emets  the  center,  standing)  and  Durham (UK) guests at the Snowmaiden's  house. Everyone wears felt boots... “What do you think about when you hear the word “Kostroma”?” Kostroma  is  a  word  that  makes  me  feel  warm  and  happy  as  I  have  many  friends  there.  I have visited lots of places and been to a  lot of schools.  I  remember  walking  on  the  ice  of  the  Volga,  going  to  theatre  shows,  the  circus,  many  wonderful  meals  both  in restaurants  and  family  homes,  parties  and  visits  to  different places, such as Susdal and Pliosk.  John Alexander Redman

“What do you think about when you hear the word “Kostroma”?” When I hear the name Kostroma I think of the great  area of pine forest and the road that winds through to  take us there. One time it was like a movie with snow  as far as the eye could see. Another time there was no  snow and the countryside was like Northumberland .  I then think of the town and how much larger it was  than  I  expected  ­  with  many  schools ,  it's  Concert  Hall and Art Gallery . It is a bustling busy town with  good  amenities  ­  shops  ,  market  and  supermarket  ,  different  types  of  housing­  apartment  blocks  as  well  as old timber buildings .  I  think  of  the  friendly ,   hospitable  people  there   who were good company and helpful in showing me  Russia.  Abel Susan Mary
