MY WEEKDAY
I get up at a quarter to seven. I jump out of bed, switch on the radio and do my morning
exercises to the radio music. Then I go to the bathroom, wash myself and clean my teeth with a
toothbrush. This does not take me much time, not more than ten or fifteen minutes. Then I dress
and sit down to table to have my breakfast. I usually have a cup of tea оr coffee, an egg and bread
and butter.
After breakfast I go to the technical school. As I live far away, I go by bus or by metro. It
takes me more time to go by bus. If I have little time, I go by metro. My lessons begin at 9 o’clock.
We have six lessons every day. At a quarter to one we have a lunch hour.
As I cannot get home for lunch, I take it at the diningroom of our technical school.
For lunch I have meat or fish with potatoes and a cup of strong tea or coffee with a pie. At
ten minutes to three the lessons are over, and I go home. When I get home from the technical
school, I have dinner. My dinner usually consists of three coursed.

or icecream. After dinner I help my mother to wash up the dishes. Then I do my lessons. This
usually takes me about two hours.
At eight or nine o’clock I have supper. I have some salad, a slice of sausage and bread, sour
milk or cereal.

MY DAY OFF
When a schoolgirl I always envied those students who went to school five but not six days a
week, as we did. So you may guess, I had the only day off — Sunday. On Sunday, I didn’t have to
hurry anywhere, that’s why, I got up at nine or ten o’clock. I wasn’t an early riser. I did my bed,
washed myself and went to the kitchen. In the kitchen the table had already been laid and I always
had something tasty on Sunday: fried potatoes, meat salad or my favourite applepies.
After breakfast, if the weather was sunny, I usually didn’t stay indoors, I went to see my
friends. We often played volleyball or basketball in the yard and in winter if there was much snow
outofdoors we went skating and skiing in the woods.
But sometimes the day happened to be rainy and gloomy. I preferred to be in watching TV,
listening to the music, reading books, speaking over the phone or just lying on the sofa idling away
the time. Some of my classmates could watch all TV programmes from morning till night, but I
think it’s rather boring, and I always felt sorry for those TVaddicts. It’s much more interesting to
play a game of chess with your grandfather, or help your mother about the house, or argue with
your father about the latest events at home and abroad.
In the evening, when all the family were together, we had some tea with a cake or biscuits,
we listened to my younger sister playing the piano, sometimes we sang folk songs.
Every Sunday, when I went to bed, I was thinking that the day had flashed past and the next
week would bring new problems and their solution.

MY USUAL SHOPPING ROUND
We go shopping every day. The other day my mother took me on a usual shopping round.
We went to the grocer’s and greengrocer’s as we had run out of sugar and onions.
At the greengrocer’s there was a long queue. But we had nothing to do but stand in the
queue if we wanted to get to the counter and have some onions. The shopgirl weighed us half a kilo
of onions, we thanked her and went out. Then we made our way to the grocer’s where we bought a
kilo of sugar and some sausage. We were about to go home as my mother suddenly remembered we
had hardly any bread in the house. We dropped in at the baker’s and bought a loaf of brown bread,
some rolls and buns. On our way home mother decided to call at a commercial shop. She was
looking for a present to my father — as it was his birthday soon.
As soon as we entered the shop, we found ourselves in a fantastic motley city of silk skirts
and shirts, woolen pullovers, frocks and leather boots and shoes. The smiling girl met us at the
counter. My mother said she wanted to buy a size 50 shirt of a darkblue colour. The girl suggested
looking at a dark blue cotton shirt with short sleeves. The shirt was the latest fashion and we were
sure the father would like it. We paid the money at the cashdesk. The cashier gave us a receipt and
with it we came up to the shopassistant. She passed us a wrapped parcel with the shirt, thanked us
and added they were always glad to see us at their shop and we happy and a bit excited went out of

tennis, swimming, volleyball, football, bodybuilding, etc.

playing with my friends. Sometimes, I go to tennis courts.

The United States sets aside a number of days each year to commemorate events, people or
public occasions. These days are called holidays. Technically, the United States does not celebrate
national holidays, but Congress has designated 10 "legal public holidays," during which most
federal institutions are closed and most federal employees do not work. Since 1971, a number of
these have been fixed on Mondays, so as to afford workers a long holiday weekend
Seven of the federal legal holidays — New Year's Day; Washington's Birthday/ Presidents'

call the holiday "Presidents' Day," to honor both Washington and Lincoln or all presidents.

conflict. The Uniform Holidays Act established a federal legal holiday, fixed on a Monday,
beginning in 1971. All 50 states observe the holiday

My future profession
The end of school is the start of our independent life and the beginning of the most serious
examination we have passed. In order to do well at this examination it is necessary to choose the
right road in life which will help us best to live and work for own good and for the benefit of our
country.
Many broad ways will open before the pupils when they leave a secondary school.
Everybody will have a chance to develop and use knowledge and education received during the
school years. There are a lot of different trades and professions, and each one must choose the
occupation in which he or she can best develop one's own talent and abilities.
Nowadays the profession of an economist has become one the most useful, modern and
interesting. That is because our country is moving towards market economy and different forms of
property are being established.
An economist exercises different functions. He or she can determine the structure of an
enterprise and calculate costs as well as probable profits. An economist analyses the condition of
the market and prospects for its development in the future. His or her practical use of electronic
computers is a must.
Having a good command of the economic situation in the region and the demands of the
market a person with an economist's diploma may establish his own business, or he may become a
partner of a joint venture.
33 It is very important for an economist to know a foreign language, especially English. That is
because contracts between our country and many countries of the world are becoming wider with
every coming day. Every economist has a chance to go abroad or to deal with foreign businessmen
coming to our country. But to become a good economist one must work hard and get not only
theoretical knowledge but also great practical skills.

At Work: Jobs
My name is Martha Glass. I'm thirtynine years old and I'm a doctor. I chose the medical
profession because I wanted to help people and at the same time make good money. When I was
younger I wanted to become a teacher or a nurse, but I soon realized there wasn't much money in
either of those professions.
My parents almost didn't help me, because they didn't want me to have a career at all. They
wanted me to do what so many other girls did. They wanted me to become a secretary, marry the
boss, have kids and stay at home. Well, I got married, and I had kids, but I have my career as
well.
Hi. I'm Billy. 1 left school when I was sixteen. I didn't have any qualification. I just wanted
to earn some money. I got a job in a factory. I didn't mind being a bluecollar worker. All I
wanted was enough money to take my girlfriend out on a Saturday night. But then they got
robots in to do my job and I was out of work.
I was out of work for sixteen months. It's terrible being unemployed. The days seem so
long. I finally got a job as an unskilled labourer, working for a builder. I'm twentyfive now. I
suppose I should go to night classes and get some extra training so that I can earn more money as
a skilled worker can.
My name is George Rushton. I'm a businessman. I'm fifty years old and I've been working
for the same company for twentyfive years. I think I've had a very successful career. I started
work with the company as a poorly paid clerk. I was one of those ninetofive whitecollar office
workers who spend all day with a pencil in one hand and a telephone in the other.
I hated it. So I was transferred to sales and became one of the company's sales
representatives. I travelled all over the country selling the company's products and became the
most successful salesperson on the staff. In ten years I have been promoted to manager of the
sales department. In another ten years I hope to retire with a good pension.

1. Do your parents have a job? What do they do?
2. What are some good jobs to have and why?

this world by some mysterious power a few
A hundred years ago people believed that plants and animals had always been as they are
now. They thought that all the different sorts of living things, including men and women, were put
in
thousand years ago.
It was Charles Darwin, born at Shrewsbury on the 12th of February, 1809, who showed that
this was just a legend. As a boy Darwin loved to walk in the countryside, collecting insects, flowers
and minerals. He liked to watch his elder brother making chemical experiments. These hobbies
interested him imuch more than Greek and Latin, which were his main subjects at school.
His father, a doctor, sent Charles to Edinburgh University to study medicine. But Charles
did not like this. He spent a lot of time with a zoologist friend, watching birds and other animals,
and collecting insects in the countryside. Then his father sent him to Cambridge to be trained as a
parson. But Darwin didn't want to be a doctor or a parson. He wanted to be a biologist.
In 1831 he set sail in the Beagle for South America to make maps of the coastline there. Darwin
went in the ship to see the animals and plants of other lands. On his voyage round the world he
looked carefully at thousands of living things in the sea and on land and came to very important
conclusions.

PROFESSION
I have always wanted to be at the top of the pyramid of people’s importance. This is why I
crave for fulfilling myself through becoming somebody who takes the reigns over financial affairs
of different kinds. In other words, I want to be a businessman.
Before making such a significant decision, I tried to weigh all pros and cons that are inherent
in the occupation of my interest. First and foremost, I comprehend the fact that being a businessman
is not simple at all. On the contrary, it is a tough and timeconsuming job that would not ever let me
relax.
However, a huge advantage of being occupied in that area is that by applying my agile mind
I would make a lot of money. Secondly, I would be a highly respected person which gives me a
serious incentive to accomplish any tasks in order to make my dream come true.
Businessmen are revered by the majority of people. I believe that this way in my life would
be of great significance for boosting my selfesteem. This is why I think that being a busy
businessman is worth it, even though it requires hard work.
Perhaps I do not fully realize many difficulties that I would have to face if once I managed
to become a businessman. There could be a number of pitfalls that would try to bring me down.
Nevertheless, I maintain a positive outlook on life and I prefer to think that my future
entrepreneurial occupation will bring me nothing but joy and success.

How to Write a Resume
LESSON 55.
PROFESSION
No matter what method of job hunting you use, inevitably somebody will ask you for a
resume. Most companies require a resume before seriously considering a job candidate from the
outside. Resumes are sometimes also required in order to receive a job transfer within a
company.
The purpose of a resume is to help you obtain a job interview, not a job. Very few people
are hired without a personal interview.
Effective resumes are straightforward, factual presentations of a person's experience and
accomplishments. They are neither over detailed nor too sketchy. A general rule is that two or
three pages in length is best.
One page seems too superficial; a fourpage (or longer) resume may irritate an impatient
employment official. Some writers suggest that a chronological (the standardtype) resume be
used; others argue for an accomplishment resume. A useful resume should include both your
experiences and key accomplishments. When sent to a prospective employer, a resume should be
professionally reproduced, with particular attention to misspellings, typographical errors, and
careful spacing.
To attract attention, some job seekers print resumes on tinted paper, in a menulike folder,
or on unusualsized paper. If done in a way to attract positive attention to yourself, these
approaches have merit.
Questions:
1. What is the purpose of a resume?
2. What are effective resumes?
3. What is the length of effective resumes?
38 4. What should a useful resume include?
5. How should a resume be reproduced?
Vocabulary:
inevitably — неизбежно
to require —требовать
to hire — нанимать
accomplishment — выполнение (достижение)
superficial — поверхностный
to irritate — раздражать
tinted paper — тоновая окрашенная бумага
merit — достоинство

The eagle became the national emblem of the country in 1782. It has an olive branch (a
symbol of peace) and arrows (a symbol of strength). You can see the eagle on the back of a dollar
bill.
The Statue of Liberty is the symbol of American democracy. It stands on Liberty Island in
New York. It is one of the first things people see when they arrive in New York by sea. This
National Monument was a present from France to the USA. France gave the statue to America in
1886 as a symbol of friendship. Liberty carries the torch of freedom — in her right hand. In her left
hand she is holding a tablet with the inscription «July 4, 1776» — American Independence Day.

Sooner or later all of us face the problem of choosing a career when we are to decide what we
are going to be in future. Choosing a career is not a simple matter — in fact, it can be one of the
most important in our life. You don't need to hurry making a decision. You should examine
thoroughly your abilities and character, take a realistic view of your strengths and weaknesses,
pay attention to your parents' and friends' advice and take into account your own preferences.
The last point in the list is particularly important because there are many examples when people
make great mistakes choosing their future profession. Sometimes they either simply follow in
the footsteps of their parents or relatives or just blindly follow their advice. Your choice should
be mostly based on your own opinion. Family traditions are good, but your turn of mind may be
quite different. So, never base only on other people's opinion.
Having thought carefully about what sort of person you are, try to work out a list of your
occupation requirements.
Nowadays there is a great variety of jobs to any taste. Choosing a future career, we should
consider the following things.
• Pay. Is the size of your salary important? Generally speaking, it is important. Of course
there may be various situations, but if you are going to be independent, successful and wealthy,
you have to find a wellpaid job. Moreover, if you are going to have a family, you should be
ready to support it, to be a breadwinner. Naturally, you'd like to live in good conditions, and
your children to study at good schools, and then to enter prestigious universities, to travel all
around the world and so on. Now you understand why you should take money into consideration
when choosing a job.
• Further training, promotion prospects and job conditions should also be kept in mind.
Just after graduating it is very difficult to find a plum job which will respond to all your
preferences. It is usually a monotonous, tedious clerical job, but if you are a capable and hard
working person, you will certainly be offered an opportunity to climb the ladder.
• Place of work. You ought to decide whether you want to work indoors (cashier, chemist,
librarian, secretary, etc.) or outdoors (driver, firefighter, estate agent, etc.). Your choice may be
based on your lifestyle or health condition.
• Fulltime, parttime, flexitime jobs. There is no set pattern to parttime working. It may
involve a later start and earlier finish time than a fulltime position, working mornings or
afternoons only, fewer working days in a week for less salary. It is a perfect variant for students
who want to juggle their studies and work, as well as flexitime jobs. Employees decide by
themselves when to begin and end their working day.
• Communication with different people. Meeting and dealing with people doesn't appeal to
every person. Some people are not very sociable; on the contrary, they are timid, shy and
diffident. Frankly speaking, it is a great talent to have communication skills. If you think you
have it, you may choose a profession involving close contacts with people, such as a doctor, a
journalist, a lawyer, a guide, a teacher.
• Business trips. You should keep in mind that some professions imply travelling all over the
world, such as tour guides, scientists, actors, journalists, pilots and so on. It's not always fun.
Business trips may last a week, a month and even more. You may be sent to London for a few
days, then you'll spend only a few hours in Paris, and right after that, without any rest, you'll
have to go to Berlin. Sometimes it turns out that you don't have even an hour for yourself just to
relax and see the town you've come to. Such trips may be very exhausting and stressful.
However, if you are young, ambitious and full of energy, you will be able not only to do your
job successfully but also see the world.
• Aspiration for creative work. If you are a creative person, it's a must for you to find such
job. It can be a job of an artist, a tailor, a designer or a stylist.

PROFESSION
One of the most difficult problems a young person faces is deciding what to do about a
career. There are individuals, of course, who from the time they are six years old "know" that
they want to be doctors or pilots or fire fighters, but the majority of us do not get around to
making a decision about an occupation or career until somebody or something forces us to face
the problem.
Choosing an occupation takes time, and there are a lot of things you have to think about as
you try to decide what you would like to do. You may find that you will have to take special
courses to qualify for a particular kind of work, or may find out that you will need to get some
actual work experience to gain enough knowledge to qualify for a particular job.
Fortunately, there are a lot of people you can turn to for advice and help in making your
decision. At most schools, there are teachers who are professionally qualified to counsel you and
to give detailed information about job qualifications. And you can talk over your ideas with
family members and friends who are always ready to listen and to offer suggestions.
But even if you get other people involved in helping you make a decision, self evaluation is
an important part of the decisionmaking process.

LESSON 59.
Favorite or profitable profession?
Choosing a future profession influences all the future life of a person. Everyone chooses his
future track depending on his dreams, knowledge, talents and gifts. Financial income and demand
for the profession also matter. Correctly chosen profession is quite fundamental to prosperity and
career prospects.
I guess, in childhood we all wanted to be pilots or ballerinas. Why is aspiration for such
professions observed among children I don’t know. Maybe because such professions can be
associated with something ethereal (unworldly) ballerinas flutter in the air, and pilots fly in the
sky. All children are dreamers and visionaries and do not like to sit at one place. However after
many years we understand that profession choice is wide and that in fact our whole future life
depends on our choice.
I want to end up doing a job that I like. Many of my friends consider only a lucrative
profession. There is no denying that wellbeing is a significant thing. But I would sooner choose my
labor of love than suffer a whole life long doing unfavourite job. It seems to me that the popularity
for professions changes every year. Today it’s profitable to be a programmer, a lawyer and a doctor,
tomorrow a plumber, a driver and a cook. First of all work has to make us happy. One, who does
not love his work, will do it in bad faith. This subsequently will adversely affect the quality of the
performed work.
