First phone boxes
The red phone box, like red doubledecker
became the symbol of London a long time ago.
Great Britain is one of the first countries which
made street phones for citizens. Shortly, after
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone
connection in 1876, phones appeared in stores
and stations. But stores didn’t work at night and
stations were only in large settlements. It was
decided to build “houses” for telephones.

called K2.These boxes began to be installed in
1926 in London, while the earlier K1 model
continued in use elsewhere. In 1929, Scott re
designed the kiosk in concrete, known as the K3
kiosk, which could be produced at a lower cost.

red was first adopted as the standard colour. The
first boxes to be painted red were in London in
July 1874.

Red Post Boxes can be seen all around London
and the rest of the UK. The most common box
seen in London is the red Pillar Box.
On every post box in the UK, the Royal cipher
can be seen of the reigning monarch at the time
of the installation. It is made up of the Christian
(first) name of the King or queen together with
the letter R which stands for Regina (Queen) or
Rex (King)
In 1856, Richard Redgrave of the Department
of Science and Art designed an ornate pillar box
for use in London and other large cities. In 1859
the design was improved, and this became the

Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s project
The competition was held in 1924 by the Royal
Fine Art Commission. They invited three
respected architects and in the end selected the
design of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Scott’s
original design was, painted silver. The model
was called K1. But when the final model was
completed it was made of cast iron, painted red,
