Youth

Dian was born in 1932, California.
Her parents divorced when she was six. Her mother remarried the following year, to businessman Richard Price. Her father tried to keep in contact, but her mother discouraged it, and all contact was subsequently lost. Fossey's stepfather never treated her as his own child. A man adhering to strict discipline, Richard Price offered Fossey little to no emotional support.
At six, she began riding horses, earning a letter from her school; by her college graduation in 1954, Fossey had established herself as an equestrienne.

Education

Fossey attended Lowell High School.
She spend her summer on a ranch in Montana at age 19 rekindled and her love of animals, and she enrolled in a pre-veterinary course in biology at the University of California, Davis.
She supported herself by working as a clerk at a White Front department store, doing other clerking and laboratory work, and laboring as a machinist in a factory.
But she can’t study anymore, because her chemistry and physics were terrible. So, she transferred to San Jose State College where she became a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and studied occupational therapy.
 She interned at hospitals in California and worked with tuberculosis patients.
In 1956 she took a job as an occupational therapist at the Kosair Crippled Children's Hospital in Louisville.

Africa

For this trip, she was living very frugally for 2 years. But even this didn’’t help her. She still had to borrow 8 thousand dollars.
Her dream became true in 1963. She traveled to Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe (then Southern Rhodesia) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaire), visiting all the famous reserves and getting to know their wild life.
In Olduvai, she fell into a quarry, broke her ankle, and immediately vomited on the fossils.
She simply could not go home without seeing the gorillas, whom she had met in absentia t a stick, Diane climbed the Virunga Mountains, saw these animals with her own eyes - and fell in love with them for life.

The way to the gorillas

Louis Leakey invited her to work with mountain gorillas. Of course, in our time, no one would have chosen Fossey to work in the conditions in which she would have to spend many years. But for Leakey, the main thing was character and dedication to the idea, and in this he was not mistaken. She had several serious chronic illnesses, including emphysema of the lungs, which she aggravated by constant smoking — an absolute contraindication to life in the mountains.
She quickly found a common language with animals. She even developed her own style of behavior with gorillas: in their presence, she moved, like them, on all fours, leaning on her hands, even chewed the same plants that they ate! And I learned to imitate their sound signals.
From the very first days, Diane not only conducted field research, but also did everything to preserve the decreasing gorilla population every year.
Diane began the struggle to preserve the reserve within its former borders, raised international public opinion and won.

Death

She was hacked to death in her sleep in her own hut, with her own machete. She was 53 years old, and she spent 18 of them with gorillas.
The mystery of her death has remained unsolved. They didn't even find the direct performers. This mysterious crime haunted many journalists who, one way or another, tried to undertake their own investigation.
The international community eventually came to the conclusion that the crime was ordered by a close relative of the President of Rwanda, Protais Zigiranyirazo, or Mr. Z, the powerful prefect of Ruhengeri Province, which includes the Volcano Park — he had personal interests in the tourism business.
